What is a forwarded image, and why does it fill up my phone?

Short answer

A forwarded image is a picture that reached you because someone passed it on from another chat, rather than one they took. On WhatsApp it carries a 'Forwarded' label. Forwards are mostly memes, greetings, quotes and news graphics, and because chat apps save media to the phone, each one becomes another file in your storage.

How is a forwarded image different from a photo someone sent?

A photo a friend takes and sends is original to that chat. When anyone shares an existing message onward, WhatsApp adds a small 'Forwarded' label above it. Images that have travelled through a chain of five or more chats get a stronger label, explained under forwarded many times.

The label lives in the chat, not in the file. Once the image is saved to the phone, the gallery sees an ordinary JPEG with no sign that it was forwarded.

Why do forwards take so much space?

  • Each chat saves its own copy. The same meme received in three groups can become three files.
  • Auto-download is often on. New media lands on the phone without a tap. See media auto-download.
  • Nobody deletes them. Clearing a chat is a separate step from clearing its media, and many people do neither.
  • Sent copies too. When you forward an image yourself, WhatsApp may keep another copy in a 'Sent' subfolder.

On Android these files sit in the WhatsApp media folder, under Android/media/com.whatsapp, and gallery apps show them in a WhatsApp Images album.

How do I clear forwarded images?

  1. In WhatsApp, open Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.
  2. Open the 'Forwarded many times' group, if shown, and select all to delete the most-circulated items in one go.
  3. Go through the biggest group chats in the list and sort their media by size or date.
  4. Check the WhatsApp Images album in your gallery for anything left behind.

For greetings specifically, see how to remove good-morning images; for the wider job, how to delete WhatsApp images and forwards.

Can software tell a forward from a real photo?

Not from the label, which stays in WhatsApp. It has to look at the picture: text-heavy designs, stock flowers, cartoon graphics and watermarks suggest a forward, while a candid scene of people or places suggests a real photo. GalleryJury, launching soon on Google Play for Android, uses this kind of content check to clear forwarded images while leaving real photos that arrived by chat, such as a cousin's wedding pictures.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting a forward in my gallery delete it in WhatsApp?

On most Android phones, yes, because both point to the same file. The message stays in the chat, but its image will show as unavailable.

Can I see who first sent a forwarded image?

No. WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption means it does not show the original sender or the full chain.
