Glossary · Free trial auto-renewal
What is free trial auto-renewal, and how do I avoid the charge?
Short answer
Free trial auto-renewal means a free app trial turns into a paid subscription on its last day unless you cancel before then. The store charges the card on file automatically. On Google Play you keep access after cancelling until the paid-for time ends, and Apple asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

What happens on the day a trial ends?
- You start a trial, typically 3 or 7 days, and confirm with your store account.
- The store records a subscription with a future first charge date.
- Unless you cancel at least a day before, the store charges the full price when the trial ends.
- The plan then renews every period, weekly in many cleaner apps, until cancelled.
Apple's help page tells subscribers to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if they do not want it to renew. On many apps, cancelling straight after starting still leaves the trial usable, and it removes the risk of forgetting.
What must an app tell me before a trial?
Google Play's subscriptions policy requires developers to explain how and when a free trial converts to a paid subscription, how much the paid plan costs, and how to cancel. Its listed violations include offers that hide the price charged at the end of the trial, missing or hard-to-see dismiss buttons, and screens where repeated taps in one spot land on a final subscribe button.
Even with these rules, the price after the trial is often in small grey text below a bright 'Start free trial' button. Reading that line is the single most useful habit.
How common are trial charges in complaints?
In 40,376 public reviews GalleryJury analysed, 25.7% of billing complaints were about being charged at the end of a free trial. Billing as a whole was the largest theme in 1–2★ reviews of cleaner apps, at 35.3%. Typical reviews describe expecting nothing to happen after a few days of use and then finding a weekly charge.
| Billing complaint | Share of billing complaints |
|---|---|
| Can't cancel, or charged after uninstalling | 30.3% |
| Charged at the end of the trial | 25.7% |
| The weekly price itself | 16.9% |
| Refunds | 14.5% |
I was charged after a trial. What now?
- Cancel first, so no further renewals occur: Google Play > profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions, or Settings > your name > Subscriptions on iPhone.
- Request a refund quickly. Google Play may refund within 48 hours; Apple takes requests at reportaproblem.apple.com. See App Store and Google Play refunds.
- If neither works and the charge was not one you agreed to, your card issuer can advise on a chargeback.
The surest way to avoid a trial charge is a model with no renewal at all, such as a free tier followed by packs paid once. Compare options in photo cleaner apps without a subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Do stores remind me before a trial ends?
Sometimes, but not reliably for every app and region. Set your own calendar reminder, or cancel immediately after starting.
Does deleting the app stop the trial converting?
No. The trial is held by Apple or Google, not by the app. It converts unless you cancel it in the store's subscription settings.
