What is Google Photos "Free up space"? What it deletes and keeps

Short answer

Free up space is a Google Photos action on Android that deletes the copies on your phone of photos and videos already backed up to your Google Account. The cloud copies stay and remain visible in Google Photos. It frees phone storage only; your Google storage use does not change, and photos under 30 days old may be kept.

What exactly does Free up space remove?

Only device copies that Google Photos has confirmed are backed up. Anything still waiting to upload, in a folder that is not backed up, or stored on a card the app cannot reach is skipped. Google's help page adds that photos and videos fewer than 30 days old may be retained on your device, so a recent holiday may not move off the phone yet.

How do you use it?

  1. Open Google Photos and check that backup is complete; the profile icon shows a status.
  2. Tap your profile photo, then Free up space on this device.
  3. Read the amount it will free, then confirm.
  4. Android may ask you to allow the deletion; approve it.

Afterwards, the photos still appear in Google Photos because the app shows cloud copies. Your phone's own gallery, such as Samsung Gallery, will no longer show them, since that app only reads files on the device. Viewing them then needs a connection, or a fresh download of each one.

Run it again every few weeks rather than once a year. Each pass only covers what has finished uploading, so a phone that shoots a lot of video benefits from smaller, regular sweeps while Wi-Fi backup keeps pace.

What problems does it not solve?

It does not reduce your Google storage, so if the warning is about your 15 GB quota, see Google One storage full. It also removes good and bad photos alike: duplicates, blurry shots and forwarded memes stay in the cloud and keep counting. Cleaning first and then freeing up space gives a tidier library in both places.

The two do different jobs. Free up space moves storage from phone to cloud; a gallery cleaner decides which photos are not worth keeping anywhere. GalleryJury, an Android app not yet released, only touches photos stored on the phone and never deletes from Google Photos' cloud. A sensible order is clean, back up, then free up space. The phone ends up lighter, and the cloud holds only the pictures worth paying to store.

Frequently asked questions

Is Free up space safe?

Yes, for photos that are backed up. Check that backup has finished and that the right Google Account is signed in before you run it.

Why didn't Free up space remove everything?

Recent photos may stay on the device, and items in folders without backup are skipped. Check backup settings for those folders.

Can I get the photos back on my phone?

Yes. Open a photo in Google Photos and choose Download to save a device copy again.
