Glossary · Good-morning image
What is a good-morning image, and why are there so many?
Short answer
A good-morning image is a greeting graphic, often flowers, a sunrise, a cup of tea or a religious motif with text, shared in family and community group chats to start the day. Variants exist for evenings, weekdays and festivals. Because chat apps save each one to the phone, a busy group can add hundreds of them a month.

Why are good-morning images so common?
They are a low-effort way to stay in touch. Older relatives in particular send them to say 'I'm thinking of you' without needing to write anything. Greeting apps, websites and other chats supply an endless stream of new designs, so the same group may get several each morning. Festival days bring a second wave, often as animated GIFs or short clips that weigh far more than a still image.
They are especially common in large family groups across South Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, and among diaspora families in the US, UK and Europe who keep in touch through WhatsApp.
How much space can greetings take?
| Daily greetings received | Approx. size each | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 150 KB | About 270 MB |
| 15 | 200 KB | About 1.1 GB |
| 30 | 250 KB | About 2.7 GB |
They also hide real photos: a grandchild's first steps can sit between two dozen sunflowers and teacups. Many arrive as forwards, so the most-shared designs also carry WhatsApp's forwarded many times label, which its storage tool can use as a filter.
How do I stop and clear them without upsetting anyone?
- Turn off media auto-download for photos on mobile data and Wi-Fi, so new greetings only download when you tap them.
- For the noisiest group, open the group info and set Media visibility to No, which hides its images from your gallery.
- In Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage, open that group and delete its media by size or date.
- Keep the chat itself; nobody is notified when you delete media on your own phone.
The full method is in how to remove good-morning images. Hiding media saves no space on its own, as media visibility explains.
Can an app find greetings automatically?
Files by Google's Clean tab includes a memes card that catches some greeting graphics. Telling a greeting from a real photo is easier with a model that reads the picture: stylised text over stock flowers looks nothing like a candid family shot. GalleryJury, the AI cleaner for Android arriving soon on Google Play, targets forwarded images like these and leaves real chat photos, favourites and anything from the last 48 hours in place.
Frequently asked questions
Will the sender know I deleted their good-morning image?
No. Deleting media on your phone affects only your copy. The message and image remain on the sender's phone and on other members' phones.
Are good-morning images harmful?
Usually not; they are just bulky. Occasionally a forward contains a link or misinformation, so treat text and links in them with the same caution as any chain message. Never tap a link inside a greeting that promises prizes or asks you to share it onward.
