What is Google One? Google's storage plans explained

Short answer

Google One is Google's subscription that adds storage to your Google Account, shared by Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Every account gets 15 GB free, and paid plans raise the total. Plans can be shared with up to five other people. Prices vary by country and change, so check Google's plans page for yours.

What counts toward your Google storage?

  • Photos and videos in Google Photos backed up in Original or Storage saver quality since 1 June 2021.
  • Gmail messages and attachments, including Spam and Trash.
  • Files in Google Drive, plus Docs, Sheets and Slides created or edited after 1 June 2021.
  • Android device backups and Meet recordings.

All of it draws on one pool. A Gmail inbox full of attachments can leave no room for photo backup even if your photo library is modest. The current split is shown at one.google.com/storage.

What happens if you go over the limit?

Once you are over quota you cannot upload new files to Drive or back up photos, and Gmail may stop sending and receiving. If an account stays over the limit for two years, Google says it may remove content from Gmail, Photos and Drive. It promises to contact you at least three months before anything is eligible for deletion, which gives time to clean up or download data.

The warning signs are easy to miss: a small banner in Gmail, a paused icon in Google Photos and, on Android, a notice that device backup did not complete. Checking the storage page once a month avoids surprises.

Do you need to pay for Google One?

Not always. Many people can stay within 15 GB by trimming what is already stored:

  1. Check the breakdown at one.google.com/storage to see which service is biggest.
  2. In Google Photos, remove large videos, duplicates and blurry shots, then empty the Trash.
  3. In Gmail, search for larger:10M and delete old attachments you no longer need.
  4. In Drive, sort by storage used and remove large old files.

The Google One storage full guide goes deeper. For a library that is mostly photos, cleaning the phone before backup slows how fast the quota fills. GalleryJury, for Android and arriving on Google Play soon, does that cleanup once per pack rather than through another monthly plan: 50 photos free, then $5 for 5,000 photos.

If you do pay, the smallest plan is usually enough for a phone library. Many users only need the extra room because their phone uploads everything, including clutter; see cloud storage quota for how the limit is measured.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google One the same as Google Drive?

No. Drive is a file service; Google One is the plan that sets how much storage Drive, Gmail and Photos can share.

Does cancelling Google One delete my photos?

Not immediately. You drop back to 15 GB; if you are over it, uploads stop, and long-term overage can lead to deletion after warnings.

Can I share Google One with family?

Yes. Paid plans can be shared with up to five other people, each with private files.
