What is the WhatsApp media folder on Android? Paths and cleanup
Short answer
The WhatsApp media folder is where WhatsApp for Android keeps every photo, video, voice note and document you send or receive. On current versions it sits at Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media. Each type has its own subfolder, and sent items sit in a Sent folder inside. Busy group chats can fill it with gigabytes of forwards.

What is inside the folder?
| Subfolder | Holds |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp Images | Photos received; Sent holds those you sent |
| WhatsApp Video | Video clips, usually the largest share |
| WhatsApp Animated Gifs and Stickers | Small files, but thousands of them |
| WhatsApp Voice Notes and Audio | Recorded messages and shared audio |
| WhatsApp Documents | PDFs, spreadsheets and other files |
Older versions stored all of this at the top of internal storage in a folder called WhatsApp. After Android 11 limited what apps could reach, WhatsApp moved the library under Android/media, a location the app owns but that galleries and file managers can still read. If you updated an old phone, the move happened automatically.
Why does it grow so quickly?
Media auto-download is the main reason. By default WhatsApp saves photos on any connection, so every image posted in every group lands on the phone whether you open it or not. Morning greetings, memes and the same viral clip arriving from five different chats all end up stored, often as separate copies.
Media visibility then puts those images in your gallery and, if Google Photos backs up the folder, in your cloud as well. You can switch visibility off under Settings, Chats, so new downloads stay out of the gallery, and limit auto-download under Settings, Storage and data.
Received files are copies, not links. If the same video arrives in three groups, WhatsApp may store it three times, each with its own file name, which is why the folder can outgrow the camera roll on a phone used for family and work chats.
How do you trim it without losing chats?
- In WhatsApp, open Settings, Storage and data, Manage storage.
- Review the Forwarded many times and Larger than 5 MB lists first; they hold most of the waste.
- Open a busy group and select its media to delete in bulk.
- Check the Sent folders too, since your own forwards stay there.
Deleting a file in a gallery app removes it from the folder, but the chat keeps a placeholder saying the media is missing. The WhatsApp forwards guide covers bulk steps, and forwarded many times explains the label.
Can the cleanup be automated?
Partly. WhatsApp's own tools sort by size and forwarding, not by what an image shows. GalleryJury, an AI photo cleaner arriving soon for Android, looks at the WhatsApp Images folder for forwards and good morning images, keeps documents protected and asks for your OK before deleting. See the WhatsApp cleaner page.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting WhatsApp media delete the chat?
No. The messages stay; only the stored file goes, and the chat shows that the media is no longer on the phone.
Is WhatsApp media included in the chat backup?
Only if you choose to include videos and media in the backup settings, which makes the backup much larger.
Can I move the folder to an SD card?
WhatsApp does not offer this on current Android versions; it saves to internal storage.
