What is WhatsApp media auto-download, and should I turn it off?

Short answer

WhatsApp media auto-download is the setting that saves incoming photos, audio, videos and documents to your phone without a tap. It has three separate rows: when using mobile data, when connected on Wi-Fi, and when roaming. Turning off photos and videos stops new media from filling storage; you then tap each item you want to see.

Where is the setting on Android?

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu at the top right of the Chats tab, then Settings.
  2. Tap Storage and data.
  3. Under Media auto-download, tap When using mobile data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming in turn.
  4. In each, untick Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents as needed, then tap OK.

On iPhone the same rows sit under Settings > Storage and Data, with options for each media type: Never, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi and Cellular.

What does each choice change?

SettingEffect on storageEffect on you
Photos on, any networkEvery image in every chat is savedImages open instantly
Photos on Wi-Fi onlySaves data, but storage still fills at homeImages wait until Wi-Fi
Photos off everywhereOnly images you tap are savedA blurred preview until you tap
Videos and documents offBiggest saving per itemTap to download large files

Videos are the costliest media type: one short clip can be larger than fifty photos. If you change only one row, switch off videos on every network. Documents are usually small, but voice-note-heavy groups and long PDFs can still add up over months.

Does turning it off delete anything?

No. Auto-download controls only what happens to new media. Everything already saved stays in the WhatsApp media folder until you remove it. To clear the backlog, use Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage, starting with the largest chats and the group labelled forwarded many times.

It also differs from media visibility, which only hides media from the gallery. Visibility changes what you see; auto-download changes what is stored.

Is there a downside to switching it off?

  • Old media can expire. If you tap an image weeks later, WhatsApp may no longer be able to fetch it from its servers, and the sender may need to resend it.
  • Backups shrink. Media you never downloaded is not in your chat backup, which is often a benefit.
  • Group photos you care about need a tap. Some people leave auto-download on for a few close chats by downloading manually and saving keepers to the gallery.

For most busy group members the trade is worth it. A family group of forty people can send more images in a week than you take in a month, and almost none of them need to sit on your phone permanently. Once new media stops flowing, a one-off clean of what is already there lasts much longer. GalleryJury, coming soon to Google Play for Android, focuses on that backlog: it clears forwards and copies from the gallery, leaving real photos and anything from the last 48 hours alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does auto-download affect voice notes?

Audio is a separate checkbox. Voice messages are usually small, so many people leave audio on and switch off photos and videos. Voice notes still play when tapped even with audio auto-download off; they just fetch first.

Why are photos still appearing in my gallery after I turned it off?

Images you tap still download and, if media visibility is on, appear in the gallery. Media saved before the change also remains.
