What does 'Forwarded many times' mean on WhatsApp?
Short answer
'Forwarded many times' is a label WhatsApp shows, with a double-arrow icon, on a message that has been forwarded through a chain of five or more chats from the person who first sent it. Such messages can be forwarded to only one chat at a time. The label also lets WhatsApp's storage tool group these items for quick deletion.

How is it different from the ordinary 'Forwarded' label?
| Label | Icon | When it appears | Forwarding limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forwarded | Single arrow | Someone passed on a message they received | Up to five chats at once |
| Forwarded many times | Double arrow | The message has passed through a chain of five or more chats | One chat at a time |
WhatsApp introduced the double-arrow label in 2019 and tightened the limit for highly forwarded messages in April 2020, during a wave of health misinformation. It counts forwards without reading the content, because messages are end-to-end encrypted.
What does the label tell me about a message?
- It did not start with the sender. The person in your chat is several steps removed from whoever created it.
- It is probably widely circulated. Chain messages, viral videos, greetings and news graphics are typical.
- It says nothing about truth. A highly forwarded message can be accurate or false; the label only measures how far it travelled.
- The media is likely duplicated. If you are in several large groups, the same viral image may have reached you more than once.
For storage purposes, the last point matters most. These are the images least likely to be personal and most likely to exist elsewhere.
How do I delete everything forwarded many times?
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.
- Look for the 'Forwarded many times' group near the top, alongside 'Larger than 5 MB'. It appears only when such items exist.
- Tap it, then select all. Review the thumbnails briefly for anything you want, such as an event notice.
- Delete. WhatsApp removes the media files, while the messages remain in their chats.
This one group often clears hundreds of memes and videos in a few taps. For the rest of the clean-up, see how to delete WhatsApp images and forwards.
Does the label survive outside WhatsApp?
No. Once a highly forwarded image is saved to your phone, it is a normal file in the WhatsApp media folder and your gallery. Google Photos and other apps cannot see that it was forwarded many times.
That is why gallery cleaners judge forwarded images by what they show. GalleryJury, an Android photo cleaner not yet released on Google Play, takes that route, clearing viral forwards from the gallery while photos people took and sent themselves stay put.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see how many times a message was forwarded?
No. WhatsApp shows only the two labels. It does not reveal the exact count, the chain of people or the original sender.
Will deleting forwarded media remove it for others?
No. Deleting media through Manage storage affects only your phone. Everyone else in the chat keeps their copy.
Why can't I forward this message to more chats?
Messages labelled 'Forwarded many times' can be forwarded to only one chat at a time, a limit WhatsApp introduced to slow the spread of viral content.
