Glossary · Weekly subscription
What is a weekly subscription in an app, and why is it so costly?
Short answer
A weekly subscription is an in-app plan that charges you every seven days until you cancel it through the App Store or Google Play. Small weekly prices add up: $5.95 a week is about $309 a year. Many phone cleaner apps sell weekly plans, often after a short free trial, and they draw far more negative reviews than one-time-price apps.

On the US App Store on 25 Oct 2026, Cleanup listed weekly plans from $5.95 to $11.99. Developer Connor Tumbleson's January 2025 review of iOS cleaners found weekly prices of $6.99 to $9.99 across several apps.
Why do cleaner apps prefer weekly billing?
People open a cleaner when the phone is full, use it once, and move on. A weekly price looks small on a paywall, takes money at the moment of need, and keeps charging if the plan is forgotten. Both Apple and Google allow a one-week billing period: Google Play's subscription setup lists Weekly first among its billing periods, ahead of every four weeks, monthly and yearly.
Comparing a weekly price with a yearly plan on the same screen also makes the yearly plan look generous, even when it costs more than many people would ever use the app for.
What do reviewers say about weekly plans?
In 40,376 public reviews GalleryJury analysed, weekly-subscription cleaners had 50.5% of reviews at 1–2★ and an average of 2.87 stars. Free and one-time-price apps had 20.1% at 1–2★ and averaged 4.04. Within billing complaints across all apps, the weekly price itself was the subject of 16.9%.
Reviews are self-selected, so these figures describe how unhappy users write, not how many users are affected. The gap between the two groups is still large and consistent. It also shows up in the language: weekly-plan reviews mention words like 'charged', 'cancel' and 'refund' far more often than reviews of free tools.
How do I avoid or end a weekly plan?
- Read the paywall's small print before tapping Continue; 'then $X/week' is the signal.
- If you start a trial, cancel it straight away in your store's subscription settings; access usually lasts until the trial ends.
- Uninstalling does not cancel. Google's help page states this directly. See how to cancel a cleaner app subscription.
- Prefer free tools or a lifetime purchase when you will clean only occasionally.
The alternative is a price that ends. A one-time pack or lifetime unlock costs the same whether you clean once or ten times, and there is no renewal date to track. Some newer cleaners, including ones still in development for Android, are built around that model from the start.
Frequently asked questions
Is a weekly subscription ever good value?
Only for a short, defined need, such as one week of cleaning before a trip, followed by cancelling at once. For anything open-ended, monthly, yearly or one-time pricing costs less.
Can I get money back for weekly charges I forgot about?
Possibly for the latest charge. Apple reviews requests at reportaproblem.apple.com, and Google Play may refund within 48 hours of a charge. The refunds explainer covers both stores.
