How-to guide
Photo cleaner apps without a subscription (2026)
Short answer
The best photo cleaners with no subscription are free built-in tools: Files by Google and Google Photos on Android, and the Duplicates album on iPhone. For similar shots, Clever Cleaner and Slidebox sell lifetime options on iPhone. GalleryJury, coming soon to Android, will give 50 free photos, then $5 for 5,000, paid once.

Why do so many cleaner apps charge weekly?
People open a cleaner when the phone is full, clean once, and leave. A weekly plan charges the most at that moment and keeps charging if it is forgotten. On the US App Store on 25 Oct 2026, Cleanup listed weekly plans from $5.95 to $11.99, next to a $29.99 yearly plan. Left running, $5.95 a week is $309 a year and $11.99 a week is $623. A January 2025 review of iOS cleaners by developer Connor Tumbleson found weekly prices of $6.99 to $9.99 across several apps.
Users notice. In 40,376 public reviews we read, weekly-subscription cleaners had 50.5% 1–2★ reviews, against 20.1% for free or one-time-price apps, and half their bad reviews were about billing. More on that.
What can the free tools not do?
Free tools compare files, so they catch exact copies but not ten near-identical shots of the same moment, a re-sent smaller copy of a photo, or a screenshot whose one-time code expired months ago. That is the gap paid cleaners fill. On Android, it is also where most of the space is.
How do I avoid a subscription when I install a cleaner?
- On the store page, read In-App Purchases (App Store) or the price note (Google Play) before installing.
- On the first paywall, look for a close button or Not now. A highlighted "Start free trial" button usually means a weekly plan after 3 or 7 days.
- If you take the trial, cancel it straight away in your store subscriptions. Uninstalling the app does not cancel it. How to cancel.
How does GalleryJury price it?
GalleryJury is coming soon to Google Play. 50 free photos to try. Then $5 for 5,000 photos. Pay once, nothing renews. No subscription. You pay per photo scanned, not per photo removed, and scanning a photo again counts again. The 50 free photos need a Google sign-in, one trial per account. Prices are in US dollars; in the EU and the UK, VAT is shown at checkout before you pay. See pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free photo cleaner?
Yes. Files by Google (Android), Google Photos' storage tools and the iOS Duplicates album are free with no ads. They handle exact copies well and similar shots poorly.
Is a lifetime plan better than a subscription?
If you will clean more than a few times, usually yes. Check that the lifetime option is the one selected on the paywall before you pay.
Will GalleryJury ever have a subscription?
No. The plan is one-time packs: 50 free photos, then $5 for 5,000 photos or $15 for 20,000, paid once. Nothing renews and credits never expire.
