Glossary · App Store / Google Play refund

How do App Store and Google Play refunds work?

Short answer

An app store refund is money returned by Google Play or Apple for a purchase made through their billing, including subscriptions bought inside an app. Google Play offers a self-service request shortly after purchase; Apple handles requests at reportaproblem.apple.com. Cancelling a subscription stops future charges but does not refund past ones on its own.

How do I request a Google Play refund?

  1. Open play.google.com, sign in, and go to Order history in your account.
  2. Find the charge and choose 'Request a refund' or 'Report a problem'.
  3. Pick the reason that fits, such as an accidental purchase or a subscription you did not mean to keep.
  4. Watch your email for the decision.

Google Play's help pages say you may be able to get a refund through Google within 48 hours of a purchase. After that, the request usually goes to the developer, who sets its own policy and can issue refunds from its console. On iPhone only Apple can refund, so a developer will point you back to Apple's page. Unauthorised charges have their own reporting route, with a longer window.

How do I request an Apple refund?

Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with the Apple ID that paid, choose 'Request a refund', pick a reason and select the purchase. Apple reviews each request and replies by email; the status also appears in the same page's history. There is no published guarantee, but clear reasons and quick requests tend to do better. If you share purchases through Family Sharing, the request must come from the account that actually paid.

Either way, cancel first. A refund for this week does nothing to stop next week's renewal, and a cancelled plan keeps working until the paid period ends.

Why do cleaner-app refunds come up so often?

Refunds made up 14.5% of billing complaints in GalleryJury's analysis of 40,376 public cleaner-app reviews. Many reviewers had uninstalled the app, believed that ended the plan, and found charges weeks later. The cancellation guide has store-by-store steps, and app pages such as Cleanup's cancellation steps cover individual apps.

If a refund is refused and the charge is truly unauthorised, a card dispute is the remaining option. Read about chargebacks before filing one, because it affects the account that holds all your other purchases.

Frequently asked questions

Does uninstalling an app get me a refund?

No. Uninstalling removes the app but leaves the subscription active and gives no money back. Cancel in the store, then request the refund separately.

What should I write in the request?

Keep it factual: the date, the amount, that you did not intend to continue past the trial, and that you have now cancelled. One or two sentences are enough.

How long does a refund take to arrive?

Once approved, the money goes back to the original payment method. Card refunds often show within a few business days, though some banks take longer; store credit or gift balance refunds usually appear almost at once.
