Glossary · Lifetime purchase

What is a lifetime purchase in an app?

Short answer

A lifetime purchase is a single in-app payment that unlocks an app's paid features for as long as the app is supported, with no renewals. Apple calls this a non-consumable purchase; Google Play calls it a one-time product. It usually costs several times a monthly plan but less than a year of weekly charges.

How does a lifetime unlock work behind the scenes?

Apple's developer documentation lists four in-app purchase types: consumable, non-consumable, auto-renewable subscription and non-renewing subscription. A lifetime unlock is a non-consumable: bought once, kept permanently, and restorable on a new device signed in to the same Apple ID. Google Play's equivalent is a one-time product tied to your Google account.

Because it is not a subscription, it never appears in the store's subscription list and cannot renew by accident.

How does lifetime compare with other plans?

Examples from US App Store listings checked 25 Oct 2026; the pack row is a planned Android price.
PlanExample US priceCost after one year
Weekly subscription$6.99/week$363.48
Yearly subscription$29.99/year$29.99
Lifetime unlock$39.99 once$39.99
Pay once per pack$5 for 5,000 photos$5 unless you buy more

On the US App Store on 25 Oct 2026, Clever Cleaner offered a $39.99 lifetime option alongside a $6.99 weekly plan, and Slidebox listed lifetime options from $29.99 to $49.99 next to weekly plans. The lifetime and weekly options often sit on the same paywall, so check which is selected before paying.

What does 'lifetime' actually cover?

  • The app's life, not yours. If the developer abandons the app or removes it from the store, the feature ends with it.
  • One platform. A lifetime unlock bought on iPhone usually does not carry over to Android.
  • Current features. Some apps move new features into a separate subscription later; the lifetime unlock keeps what it originally included.
  • One account. It is tied to the Apple ID or Google account that paid, though family sharing may apply on iPhone.

When is a lifetime purchase worth it?

It pays off when you expect to use the app repeatedly over more than a year. For a one-off clean, free tools or a small one-time pack cost less. Reviews point the same way: in 40,376 public reviews GalleryJury analysed, free and one-time-price cleaners averaged 4.04 stars, against 2.87 for weekly-subscription ones, which suggests buyers are happier when the price is known up front. That analysis came from the team behind a coming Android cleaner that sells 5,000-photo packs for $5, paid once, instead of either option.

Compare approaches in photo cleaner apps without a subscription and the pricing page. Before paying for any lifetime unlock, check when the app was last updated; a product with no update in a year may not have much lifetime left.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a lifetime purchase back on a new phone?

Yes, on the same platform. Use the app's Restore Purchases option while signed in to the account that paid. If the button is missing, reinstalling the app while signed in usually restores it automatically.

Can a lifetime purchase be refunded?

It follows the store's normal rules: Apple reviews requests at reportaproblem.apple.com, and Google Play may refund within 48 hours of purchase.
