Glossary · Junk screenshot

What is a junk screenshot, and which ones are safe to delete?

Short answer

A junk screenshot is a screen capture whose job is finished: a one-time code that has expired, a delivery tracking page for a parcel that has arrived, a boarding pass for a past flight, or a meme already shared. They pile up in the Screenshots folder and are safe to delete, unlike captures of tickets, receipts or documents.

Which screenshots are junk and which are worth keeping?

A rough split. Your own needs decide the edge cases.
Usually junkUsually keep
Login and one-time codesTickets for future events or travel
Tracking pages for delivered parcelsReceipts needed for returns or warranty
Directions to a place you already reachedIDs, insurance cards and booking references
Memes and chat snippets already sentScreenshots of messages you may need as evidence
Prices and product pages from past shoppingMedical or bank details you refer to

Why do screenshots pile up so fast?

Taking one is quicker than writing anything down, so screenshots become a phone's scratch pad. They are rarely opened again, and nothing reminds you to delete them. A shopping comparison, a map pin and a recipe can all land in the same afternoon. Android saves them to a dedicated Screenshots folder, usually inside Pictures or DCIM, and Google Photos backs that folder up if backup is on.

Individually they are small, often a few hundred kilobytes, but tall scrolling captures on high-resolution screens can be several megabytes. A few thousand of them add up, and they bury the real photos when you scroll. They also slow down manual cleanups, because every screenshot has to be judged one at a time, and a screenshot of a bank code looks no different in a thumbnail from a recipe.

How do I clear junk screenshots on Android?

  1. Open Google Photos, go to Collections or Library, and open the Screenshots album.
  2. Long-press the oldest one and drag to select a range; most screenshots older than a few months are finished with.
  3. Skip anything that looks like a ticket, receipt, ID or bank detail, and anything showing an address or a warranty serial number.
  4. Delete, then empty the trash to recover the space. Deleted items otherwise sit there for up to 30 days and still count.

Files by Google's Clean tab may also show a card for old screenshots. For a complete walk-through, see how to delete all screenshots on Android.

Can a cleaner tell junk screenshots from important ones?

A cleaner that only checks file names or the folder cannot. One that reads what the screenshot shows can sort an expired code from a passport scan. GalleryJury, an AI cleaner coming soon for Android, clears junk screenshots and keeps documents protected, so IDs and receipts are left out of every clean. Frequently asked questions

Do screenshots count against Google storage?

Yes, if they are backed up to Google Photos. They count toward the 15 GB that a free Google Account shares across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

Can I stop screenshots from backing up?

Yes. In Google Photos, open backup settings, choose the device folders to back up, and turn off Screenshots. New screenshots then stay only on the phone, where you can clear them without touching the cloud.
