What is a megapixel? Resolution, file size and print size
Short answer
A megapixel is one million pixels, the unit used to describe how many dots make up a digital image or a camera sensor. A 12 MP photo is about 4,000 by 3,000 pixels. More megapixels allow bigger prints and tighter crops, but they also make larger files and say little on their own about sharpness or low-light quality.

How do you work out megapixels?
Multiply the width by the height in pixels and divide by one million. A 4,000 x 3,000 photo has 12,000,000 pixels, so it is 12 MP. A 4:3 phone shot at 50 MP is about 8,160 x 6,120, and a 200 MP shot is about 16,320 x 12,240. Screenshots are tiny by comparison: a 1,080 x 2,400 phone screen is roughly 2.6 MP.
The width and height are in each photo's details screen in Google Photos or Samsung Gallery, and in the EXIF metadata of the file.
Aspect ratio changes the count. Switching a 12 MP camera from 4:3 to 16:9 crops the top and bottom, giving about 9 MP, and the square 1:1 option drops it further.
How many megapixels do you need for a print?
Printers usually aim for about 300 pixels per inch for close viewing. The table shows the largest sharp print each size supports at that density; posters viewed from a distance can go much bigger.
| Image size | Pixels | Print at 300 ppi |
|---|---|---|
| 2.6 MP (screenshot) | 1,080 x 2,400 | 3.6 x 8 in |
| 8 MP | 3,264 x 2,448 | 10.9 x 8.2 in |
| 12 MP | 4,000 x 3,000 | 13.3 x 10 in |
| 50 MP | 8,160 x 6,120 | 27.2 x 20.4 in |
For a phone or laptop screen, even 8 MP is more than enough. A 4K television shows about 8.3 MP.
Why doesn't a higher megapixel count mean a better photo?
Image quality depends on sensor size, pixel size, the lens and the phone's processing as much as on pixel count. Packing 200 million pixels onto a small sensor makes each one tiny, so most phones combine them through pixel binning and save 12 MP files by default. In good light, the full-resolution mode can capture extra detail; indoors it often looks noisier than the binned shot.
A blurred 50 MP photo is still blurred. When choosing between similar shots, sharpness and exposure decide which is worth keeping, a point covered in how an AI cleaner decides.
How do megapixels affect storage?
File size grows roughly with pixel count, adjusted for format and detail. A 12 MP JPEG is commonly 2 to 5 MB, while full-resolution 50 MP or 200 MP files can run from 10 MB to over 30 MB each. If storage is tight, check whether the camera is set to a high-resolution mode by mistake; it is usually a toggle in the top bar marked with the MP figure.
Resizing old photos to save space is rarely worth it. Deleting the duplicates and failed shots around the good ones frees more without touching the keepers.
Frequently asked questions
Is 12 MP enough for a phone camera?
Yes for most uses. It covers screens of every size and sharp prints up to about A4 or 13 x 10 inches.
Does Google Photos reduce megapixels?
Storage saver resizes photos larger than 16 MP down to 16 MP. Original quality keeps the full resolution.
Why are my front-camera photos smaller?
Front cameras often use lower-resolution sensors or bin pixels more aggressively, so selfies are often fewer megapixels than main-camera shots.
