What is the Screenshots folder on Android? Where it lives and why it grows

Short answer

The Screenshots folder is where Android saves every screen capture you take. On Pixel phones it is usually Pictures/Screenshots, while Samsung and many other brands use DCIM/Screenshots. Galleries show it as its own album. Because captures pile up silently and are rarely reopened, it is often one of the easiest places to recover space.

Where does each phone save screenshots?

Paths vary with Android and skin versions; a file manager shows the real location.
PhoneUsual path
Google PixelPictures/Screenshots
Samsung GalaxyDCIM/Screenshots
Xiaomi, Redmi, POCODCIM/Screenshots
OnePlus, OPPODCIM/Screenshots or Pictures/Screenshots, by software version

The exact spot matters less than the album name. Android's media index files each capture under a bucket called Screenshots, so Google Photos, Samsung Gallery and most other galleries group them together whatever the folder path. If you use a third-party screenshot tool, it may save to its own folder instead, which then appears as a separate album.

Screen recordings usually go somewhere else, such as Movies or DCIM/Screen recordings, and are far larger per item, so check that album as well.

Why does the folder get so big?

Most captures are taken for a moment: a boarding pass, a delivery code, a recipe, a map, a chat to forward. Nobody deletes them afterwards. A habit of ten a day becomes more than 3,600 a year. Pixel phones save screenshots as PNG, a lossless format that keeps text crisp but makes each file several times larger than a JPEG of the same screen. Samsung lets you choose JPG or PNG in the screenshot settings.

Scrolling or long captures add to it, since a single tall image can be the size of a dozen ordinary ones. If Google Photos backs the folder up, every capture also takes cloud quota.

Messaging apps make it worse: a screenshot shared in WhatsApp is saved again in its media folder, so one capture can exist twice on the same phone.

Which screenshots are safe to delete?

  • Codes, tickets and confirmations for dates that have passed.
  • Captures of something you have since saved properly, such as an address added to contacts.
  • Several near-identical shots of the same screen taken while scrolling.
  • Images you only took to share in a chat, which the chat app already holds.

Keep receipts, warranty details, ID documents and anything you might need as proof. The free walk-through is the delete all screenshots guide, and the junk screenshot page explains how tools tell a stale capture from a useful one.

Can a cleaner tell useful captures from junk?

Sorting by age helps, but content matters more. An old screenshot of a passport is worth keeping; a new one of a meme is not. GalleryJury, an Android app coming soon to Google Play, flags junk screenshots for review while keeping documents protected, and nothing is deleted without your OK. Removed items go to the phone's trash first, so a wrong tap can be reversed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change where screenshots are saved?

Not on most phones. The system screenshot tool uses a fixed folder, although some brands let you pick the file format.

Does deleting a screenshot in Google Photos remove the backup?

Yes, if it was backed up. Deleting inside Google Photos removes it from the phone and the cloud after it leaves the trash.
