What is Files by Google Clean? The free cleanup tab explained
Short answer
Clean is a tab in Google's free Files by Google app that suggests things to delete. It shows cards for junk files, duplicate files, old screenshots, memes, blurry pictures, large files and unused apps, each with the space it would free. It has no ads or subscription and asks you to review and confirm before anything is removed.

What do the Clean cards find?
| Card | What it targets |
|---|---|
| Junk files | Temporary app files and leftovers |
| Delete duplicate files | Files that are exact copies of each other |
| Delete memes | Images it identifies as memes, often from chat apps |
| Delete blurry or bad pictures | Photos it judges blurry or poorly exposed |
| Large files and old screenshots | Big items and captures past a certain age |
| Unused apps | Apps not opened for weeks |
Each card opens a list you can tick through. Duplicate files are matched by content, so two copies of the same photo with different names are grouped. One copy in each group stays unticked by default, which prevents deleting every version by mistake.
The meme and blurry cards rely on automatic image analysis. They work best on obvious cases, such as a text-heavy meme saved from a group chat or a shot taken in a pocket, and are less sure about photos that are merely soft or slightly dark.
Suggestions refresh as the phone changes. A card that showed nothing last week may reappear after a busy weekend of chat downloads, so a quick look every month or so keeps the lists short.
How do you use it well?
- Install Files by Google from Google Play if your phone lacks it; it is preinstalled on many.
- Open the app and tap Clean at the bottom.
- Start with Junk files, which removes nothing personal.
- Open the duplicate and meme cards and scan each list before you confirm.
Deleted items move to the app's Trash, where they wait for 30 days, so a hasty tap can usually be undone. Empty Trash when you are sure, or the space is not returned.
Unused apps are worth a careful look. Removing an app you rarely open frees its install size and its data, but you lose sign-ins and offline content inside it, so archive or back up anything you need first.
What does it not do?
Files by Google looks at files, not moments. Ten slightly different shots of the same sunset are not duplicates in its sense, so it will not suggest which one to keep. The blurry card catches obvious failures but leaves borderline ones. It also has no view of your Google Photos cloud copies, so it frees phone space only; for cloud quota see Google Photos Free up space.
That gap is where gallery cleaners differ. GalleryJury, a coming-soon Android app, picks the best shot from bursts and flags near-identical copies and forwards, with nothing deleted without your OK. A full comparison is on GalleryJury vs Files by Google.
It also cannot see inside apps' private folders, so WhatsApp's own chat database or a game's downloaded content is out of reach. Those are cleared from each app's storage settings.
Frequently asked questions
Is Files by Google safe to use?
Yes. It is made by Google, is free and asks before deleting. Read each list, because the cards are suggestions.
Does Files by Google delete photos from Google Photos?
No. It removes files on the phone. Copies already backed up stay in your Google Photos library.
