How-to guide
How to free up space on Android by cleaning your photos
Short answer
Photos and videos are usually the biggest use of space on Android. Check Settings > Storage, then use Google Photos' Free up space to remove phone copies already backed up, Files by Google > Clean for duplicates, memes and blurry shots, and WhatsApp's Manage storage for forwards. Empty each trash at the end, or the space won't come back.

How to free up photo space on Android
- See what uses space. Open Settings > Storage. On Samsung, Settings > Device care > Storage (the name varies by One UI version). Note how much Images and Videos use.
- Remove backed-up copies. In Google Photos, tap your profile picture > Free up space on this device. Only photos already backed up are removed from the phone; they stay in Google Photos.
- Delete exact duplicates. In Files by Google, open Clean and the Duplicate files card. Keep the one marked Original.
- Clear memes and blurry shots. In the same Clean tab, use Delete memes and the suggested pictures card for blurry, dark or low-resolution photos, when they appear.
- Clear chat forwards. In WhatsApp, Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage > Forwarded many times, then Larger than 5 MB.
- Empty the trash. Empty the trash in your gallery app, Files by Google and Google Photos. Deleted items still use space until then.
Can I free up space without deleting photos I want?
Yes. Most galleries are full of photos nobody would miss: burst extras, re-sent copies, old screenshots and chat forwards. Removing those, plus phone copies of photos that are already safe in the cloud, often frees several gigabytes without touching a photo you care about.
Why is my Android storage full of photos?
- Burst and repeat shots: five tries at the same picture, all kept.
- Chat apps download every image in every group by default.
- Screenshots taken for a moment: codes, tracking pages, tickets.
- Copies: the camera original plus a smaller copy sent or saved from a chat.
What do the free tools miss?
| Tool | Exact copies | Similar shots | Screenshots and forwards | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Files by Google | Yes | No | Memes card | Free |
| Samsung Gallery (Clean out) and My Files | Yes | Some One UI versions | No | Free |
| Google Photos Free up space | Removes backed-up phone copies | No | No | Free |
| GalleryJury (coming soon) | Yes | Yes, keeps the best shot | Yes | 50 free photos, then $5 for 5,000; no subscription |
The gap is similar shots: ten near-identical photos of one moment are ten different files, so file-comparison tools treat them as ten keepers.
Should I pay for more storage instead?
Phone storage can't be upgraded on most phones, so people often pay for a cloud plan and let the phone delete local copies. That works, but it renews every month, and the junk gets backed up along with everything else. Clearing it first keeps both the phone and the cloud lighter. See Google One storage full.
Stop paying for extra storage. Pay once instead.
Is there an app that does all of this at once?
GalleryJury, coming soon to Google Play, scans the photos on your phone, keeps the best shot from every burst, and lists copies, junk screenshots and forwards with the space each frees. Documents are protected and nothing is deleted without your OK; deleted photos go to Android's trash first. 50 free photos to try, then $5 for 5,000 photos. Pay once, nothing renews. No subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Does Free up space in Google Photos delete my photos?
No. It deletes only the phone copies of photos that are already backed up. They stay in Google Photos and still count toward your Google storage.
Does clearing cache delete photos?
No. Cache is temporary app data. Clear cache is safe; Clear storage or Clear data resets an app.
Why didn't my storage go down after deleting photos?
Deleted photos sit in the trash until it is emptied or until it clears itself. Empty the trash in each app you used.
