Storage cleaner vs gallery cleaner: which one frees more space?

Short answer

A storage cleaner removes system leftovers: app cache, temporary files, old installers and forgotten downloads. A gallery cleaner works only on photos, finding duplicates, bursts, blurry shots, screenshots and forwards. On most phones photos and videos use far more space than leftovers, so a gallery cleaner usually recovers more, while a storage cleaner gives smaller, quickly refilled gains.

The names overlap in app stores. Many storage cleaners add a duplicate photo tab, and many photo cleaners call themselves phone cleaners. The useful test is what the scan actually lists: file types and folders, or pictures grouped by moment.

A quick way to judge a scan result is to compare it with Android's own storage screen. If a cleaner reports many gigabytes of junk while Settings shows only a little in Apps and Other, the number is probably counting things you would not want gone, such as offline maps or downloaded music.

Which one frees more space?

Look at Settings, Storage first. If Images and Videos are the largest bars, a gallery cleaner addresses the real problem. Junk files such as cache are real but limited, and apps rebuild their cache as soon as you use them again, so the space returns within days. Clearing the cache of one heavy app can still help when a single app has ballooned.

Many storage cleaners also advertise speed boosts, RAM clearing or battery saving. Android manages memory itself, which is why the booster app idea has lost ground. In 40,376 public reviews of cleaner apps analysed in October 2026, complaints about booster claims made up 1.3% of 1 and 2 star reviews and fake scan results 1.0%, while 20.4% said the app was simply useless.

Photo libraries behave differently. A thousand burst frames, forwarded images and expired screenshots do not come back on their own once they are removed, so the gain from a gallery cleanup lasts. That is also why photo cleanup tends to need a closer look than clearing cache: the items are personal and some are worth keeping.

Do you need a separate app for either?

Often not for storage. Android's own storage page and Files by Google clear cache, old downloads and unused apps for free; see Files by Google Clean. For photos, built-in tools find exact copies but say little about which of ten similar shots to keep.

GalleryJury, an Android gallery cleaner coming soon to Google Play, focuses only on photos: it picks the best shot from bursts and flags near-identical copies, junk screenshots and forwards. It costs nothing for the first 50 photos, then $5 for 5,000 photos, paid once with no subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Can a storage cleaner delete my photos?

Some include photo sections, so read each list before confirming. Android asks you to approve photo deletions either way.

Should I clear cache regularly?

Only when an app misbehaves or one cache is very large. Routine clearing makes apps slower to reopen.

Which should I try first?

Check the storage breakdown in Settings. Clean whichever category is largest, which on most phones is photos and videos.
