What is the DCIM folder? Where your camera saves photos
Short answer
DCIM, short for Digital Camera Images, is the standard top-level folder where cameras and phones save the photos and videos they take. The layout comes from the Design rule for Camera File system (DCF), a Japanese industry standard. On Android, your camera roll is usually in DCIM/Camera, and other apps may add their own subfolders.

Where does the DCIM layout come from?
JEITA, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, published the DCF standard so any device could read a camera's memory card. It sets folder and file names: subfolders under DCIM take a three-digit number from 100 to 999 plus five characters, such as 100CANON, and files use four characters plus four digits, such as IMG_0001.JPG. DCF files follow the Exif format, which is why EXIF metadata travels with every camera image.
Phones keep the top-level name but bend the rules. Android cameras usually write to DCIM/Camera with names based on date and time, such as PXL_20261031_093015123.jpg on a Pixel or 20261031_093015.jpg on Samsung.
The numbered folders matter on cameras: a camera that reaches IMG_9999 starts a new folder, such as 101CANON, and resets the counter. Phones rarely hit this because their names include the date.
What is inside DCIM on an Android phone?
| Folder | Contents | Safe to clean? |
|---|---|---|
| DCIM/Camera | Your camera photos and videos | Review first, these are originals |
| DCIM/Screenshots | Screenshots on some phones | Mostly yes, after review |
| DCIM/.thumbnails | Hidden preview images | Yes, they rebuild |
| DCIM/<app name> | Edits or captures from other apps | Depends on the app |
Other picture sources often sit outside DCIM: Pictures/Screenshots on Pixel, Android/media for WhatsApp, and Download for browser saves. The Screenshots folder page covers where each brand puts them.
Some apps create their own folder inside DCIM, such as DCIM/Snapchat or a folder for an editing app. Google Photos may ask whether to back each one up, which is worth checking so app exports do not duplicate originals in the cloud.
What should you delete from DCIM?
- Never delete the whole folder; it holds your originals.
- Look for bursts, near-copies and failed shots in DCIM/Camera and keep the best of each.
- Clear the .thumbnails subfolder if previews are wrong or the folder is large.
- Check backup before deleting, since originals in DCIM may be the only copy.
Google Photos backs up DCIM/Camera by default, so most cloud clutter starts here. GalleryJury, an AI photo cleaner for Android arriving soon, focuses on this kind of folder: it picks the best shot from a burst, flags near-identical copies and deletes nothing until you say OK. The guide to deleting similar photos shows the free route.
Moving the folder to an SD card is allowed on many phones, but do it through the camera's storage setting rather than by dragging files, so new photos follow and nothing is copied twice. Check the card's free space first, since a full card makes the camera fall back to internal storage.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I delete the DCIM folder?
You delete every photo and video the camera saved, and they go to the trash only if your file manager uses one. Do not do it without a backup.
Why is there a DCIM folder on my SD card?
If the camera saves to the card, it creates its own DCIM folder there, following the same standard.
