Question
What happens when your Google storage is full?
Short answer
Google stops accepting anything new. Photos and videos no longer back up, you can't upload to Drive or create new Docs, and sending and receiving Gmail can be affected. Nothing is deleted straight away. If you stay over the limit for 2 years or more, Google may remove content, after at least 3 months' notice.

What stops working, service by service?
| Service | When you are over quota |
|---|---|
| Google Photos | New photos and videos stop backing up; they stay only on the phone |
| Google Drive | You can't upload or sync new files |
| Docs, Sheets, Slides | You can't create new files that would use storage |
| Gmail | Your ability to send and receive mail can be impacted |
| Android device backup | SMS, call history and app data backups can't complete |
Everything you already store stays where it is. You can still open, share and download it. The problems are all about new data coming in.
Shared family plans work the same way. If the shared pool fills, every member's backups pause, not only those of the person who used the space.
Will Google delete my files if I stay full?
Only after a long time. Google's policy is that if you are over your limit for 2 years or more, it may remove content from Gmail, Drive and Photos. Before that it says it will give at least 3 months of notice, by email and inside its apps, so you have a chance to delete things or buy space.
Two years sounds generous, but the clock starts the day you go over, not the day you notice. If you get a warning, act on it.
Which problem should I fix first?
Mail, if you use Gmail for anything important. Bounced messages from a bank, school or employer cause more trouble than a paused photo backup. Free a gigabyte or two quickly by deleting large attachments: search Gmail for has:attachment larger:10M and remove what you don't need, then empty Bin.
Next, photos. While backup is paused, a lost phone means lost pictures. Open one.google.com/storage to see whether Photos, Gmail or Drive is the biggest user, then use the what-to-delete guide for the order. If deleting doesn't seem to help, see Google storage full but nothing to delete.
Is a storage full warning always genuine?
No. Fake "your Google storage is full" emails are a common phishing lure that lead to payment pages. The real figure is always at one.google.com/storage when you go there yourself; more in is the storage full email a scam.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 15 GB limit apply to each Google service?
No. The free 15 GB is one pool shared by Gmail, Drive and Photos.
Will my phone stop working if Google storage is full?
No. Phone storage is separate. Only cloud backup and Google services that need cloud space are affected.
Can I still see my old photos?
Yes. Everything already backed up remains viewable in Google Photos. Only new uploads are blocked.
