Question

Google storage full but nothing to delete? Where the space hides

Short answer

The space is almost always somewhere you are not looking. Gmail attachments, Spam and Bin folders, Drive's Bin, backups of old Android phones, WhatsApp chat backups and hidden app data in Drive all count. Open one.google.com/storage, check each service, and look at the Backups section before assuming the meter is wrong.

Where should I look first?

  1. one.google.com/storage: note which of Gmail, Drive or Photos is largest. People are often surprised that it is Gmail.
  2. Gmail: search larger:10M and in:anywhere older_than:2y has:attachment. Then empty Spam and Bin.
  3. Drive's Bin: open Drive on a computer, click Bin, then Empty bin. Files there still count.
  4. Device backups: in Google One, open Storage, then Backups. Old phones you no longer own often sit here.
  5. Photos trash: in Google Photos, Collections > Trash. Items stay for 30 days and still count.

Work down that list in order and recheck the bar after each step. The first one or two usually explain most of the gap, and you avoid hunting through folders that hold only a few megabytes.

What hidden data can fill Google storage?

  • App data in Drive. Some apps store backups in a hidden folder. In Drive on the web, open Settings > Manage apps to see which apps hold data and delete it.
  • WhatsApp backups. These count on Android and can be large if videos are included.
  • Shared drives are different. Files in a Shared drive belong to the organisation, but files others shared with you in My Drive do not use your space unless you own them.
  • Orphaned files. Files whose folder was deleted can still be in your Drive. Search is:unorganized owner:me to find them.

What if the meter still looks wrong?

After a big clean, the meter can lag. Give it a day. If you share a Google One plan, your bar may show the family total, not just yours. Ask the family manager to check who is using the space.

Still stuck? Google's help pages describe the storage manager at one.google.com/storage as the reliable view. Work through the deletion order, and read why Google storage fills up for the list of everything that counts.

Old accounts are worth a thought too. If you once used a second Gmail address on a tablet or old phone, photos may have been backing up to it, which makes your main account look smaller than you expect while that one fills up.

Frequently asked questions

Do photos shared with me use my storage?

No. Shared albums and files someone else owns count against the owner. Saving a copy to your library makes it yours.

How do I delete an old phone backup?

In the Google One app, open Storage, scroll to device backup, pick the old device and delete its backup. Keep the backup of the phone you use now.

Does Google count Spam toward storage?

Yes. Messages in Spam and Bin use space until they are removed, so empty both after a large clean.
