How-to guide
Google One storage full: what to delete first
Short answer
Open one.google.com/storage to see whether Photos, Gmail or Drive uses most of your 15 GB. Delete in this order: large videos and blurry or duplicate photos in Google Photos, Gmail attachments over 10 MB, then big old Drive files. Empty each trash at the end, because trashed items still count until they are removed.

How to clear Google storage
- See the breakdown. Open one.google.com/storage. It shows how much Gmail, Drive and Photos each use.
- Clean Google Photos. In Google Photos, open Manage storage to review large videos, blurry photos and screenshots. See the Google Photos guide.
- Clean Gmail. Search Gmail for has:attachment larger:10M, delete what you don't need, then empty Spam and Bin.
- Clean Google Drive. In Drive, open Storage to sort files by size. Delete large old files and empty Drive's Bin.
- Empty every trash. Trashed items in Photos, Gmail and Drive still count until they are removed.
What should I delete first?
| Order | What | Where | Why first |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Long videos | Google Photos > Manage storage | One video can be the size of hundreds of photos |
| 2 | Blurry photos, screenshots, duplicates | Google Photos > Manage storage | Nobody misses them |
| 3 | Big attachments | Gmail search has:attachment larger:10M | Old newsletters and forwards add up |
| 4 | Large old files | Drive > Storage | Sorted by size, easy to spot |
| 5 | WhatsApp backup videos | WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup | Android chat backups count toward Google storage |
What happens when Google storage is full?
- Photos and videos stop backing up to Google Photos.
- You can't upload new files to Google Drive.
- Your ability to send and receive Gmail can be affected.
- If you stay over quota for 2 years or more, Google may remove your content, including Gmail, Photos and Drive. Google says it gives at least 3 months' notice first.
Why is Google storage still full after deleting photos?
- Deleted photos sit in Google Photos' Trash and still count until it is emptied.
- Photos may not be the biggest user: Gmail and Drive share the same 15 GB.
- Deleting phone copies with Free up space doesn't touch the cloud copy, so it doesn't free Google storage.
- The storage meter can take a while to update.
How can I stop paying for Google One?
Get under 15 GB first using the steps above, then cancel in Google One: Settings > Cancel membership, or in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions. Google One prices vary by country and change; check one.google.com/about/plans for yours. Every paid plan renews until you cancel it.
The cheapest gigabyte is the one you never back up. Burst extras, re-sent copies and chat forwards get uploaded along with everything else unless you clear them on the phone first.
Can an app clear photos before they reach Google storage?
GalleryJury, coming soon to Android, cleans the photos on your phone: it keeps the best shot from every burst and lists copies, junk screenshots and forwards, with documents protected and nothing deleted without your OK. It doesn't connect to Google Photos, so photos already backed up stay in your Google account; clear those with Manage storage. Stop paying for extra storage. Pay once instead: 50 free photos to try, then $5 for 5,000 photos. No subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Is 15 GB free storage per app?
No. The 15 GB is shared by Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos in one Google Account.
Does WhatsApp backup count toward Google storage?
Yes. WhatsApp chat backups on Android count toward your Google Account storage. Leaving videos out of the backup makes it smaller.
Google storage full but nothing to delete?
Check all three services at one.google.com/storage and empty each trash. Large items often hide in Gmail attachments, Drive's Bin or an old Android device backup.
