Question

What happens if I cancel Google One or stop paying?

Short answer

Your paid storage stays until the end of the billing cycle, then the account drops to the free 15 GB. Google says your files stay safe, but if you are over the limit you can't store anything new: Photos backup stops, Drive uploads fail and Gmail can stop sending and receiving. Plans are usually non-refundable.

When does the change take effect?

Not immediately. Google's help page on plan changes says that for a downgrade your current plan remains active until the end of your billing cycle. Cancelling works the same way: you keep the space and benefits you paid for, then move to the free tier on the next cycle.

Extras tied to the plan end at the same time. That can include family sharing of storage, any Gemini features bundled with AI plans, and member perks offered in your country.

If the plan was bought through Google Play on a phone, it appears in the Play Store's subscriptions list too, and cancelling there has the same effect as cancelling in Google One.

What if I am still over 15 GB?

Google puts it plainly: "All your files stay safe, but you can't store anything new." In practice that means:

  • New photos stay only on your phone, with no cloud copy.
  • Gmail may stop sending and receiving.
  • Drive won't sync or accept uploads.
  • After 2 years over the limit, Google may delete content, with at least 3 months' warning.

So cancelling is safe for what you have, but risky for what you create next. Get under 15 GB first, or accept that photos taken after the plan ends are not backed up.

A practical safeguard is to download what matters with Google Takeout before the plan ends. That gives you a copy outside Google even if you later decide to delete things to get under the limit.

How do I cancel, and can I get money back?

  1. Open the Google One app or one.google.com and go to Settings, then Cancel membership. Or in the Play Store: profile picture > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
  2. Pick a smaller plan instead if one fits; Google lets you downgrade rather than cancel.
  3. Confirm and keep the email.

On refunds, Google says that in most countries or regions, Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable. You keep the storage for the period you paid for instead. Before cancelling, trim what you store using the Google One guide, and see is Google One worth it if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Will Google delete my photos the day I cancel?

No. Nothing is deleted when the plan ends. Deletion only becomes possible after 2 years over quota, with notice.

Can I rejoin later?

Yes. You can buy a plan at any time, and uploads resume as soon as you have space.

Do UK and EU users get a cooling-off refund?

Google's policy page lists no general UK or EU exception for storage plans. If you just signed up, contact Google support and ask; consumer law in your country may give you more.
