Question

Why is my Google storage full?

Short answer

Because one 15 GB allowance covers everything in your Google Account. Original-quality photos and videos are usually the biggest user, but Gmail attachments, Drive files, Android phone backups, WhatsApp chat backups and Meet recordings all draw from the same pool. Since June 2021 even Storage saver photos count.

What counts toward Google storage?

  • Photos and videos backed up to Google Photos, in Original quality or Storage saver.
  • Gmail: every message and attachment, including Spam and Bin until emptied.
  • Drive files, plus Docs, Sheets and Slides created or edited after 1 June 2021.
  • Android backup: SMS and MMS, call history, device settings and app data.
  • WhatsApp chat backups on Android.
  • Google Meet recordings saved to Drive.

Before June 1, 2021, photos in High quality (now called Storage saver) were free. Photos backed up before that date still don't count; anything after it does.

Why did it fill up so suddenly?

A few common triggers:

  • A new phone that turned on backup and uploaded every photo at full size.
  • WhatsApp backups that include videos. Busy group chats can push a single backup past several gigabytes.
  • Backing up device folders such as WhatsApp Images or Screenshots in Google Photos, which uploads every forward and code screenshot.
  • Someone sharing a family plan and filling the shared pool.

Trash is another culprit. Photos and mail you delete keep counting until they leave the trash, so a big cleanup can look like it did nothing for weeks.

How do I see which part is biggest?

Go to one.google.com/storage. The bar splits usage into Gmail, Drive and Photos. Below it, the Clean up space tool lists large files, large attachments and items in each trash. In Google Photos, Manage storage groups blurry photos, screenshots and large videos so you can review them.

If Photos is the main user, the quickest fix is often upstream. Stop backing up WhatsApp and Screenshots folders, and clear repeats before they upload. The Google One guide gives the deletion order; how to free up space in Google Photos covers the Photos tools.

GalleryJury, an Android app launching soon on Google Play, is built for that upstream step. It works on the photos stored on your phone: keeps the best shot from each burst, flags near-identical copies, junk screenshots and forwards, and deletes nothing until you approve. It never touches photos already in Google Photos' cloud, so those still need Manage storage.

Checking once a month is enough for most people. The bar changes slowly, and a quick look catches a runaway backup before it fills the rest of the pool.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting photos to Storage saver free space?

Yes. Google lets you convert existing Original-quality photos and videos to Storage saver from Manage storage, which can recover a lot of space. The change lowers their quality and can't be reversed.

Do Google Docs count toward storage?

Docs, Sheets and Slides created or edited since 1 June 2021 count. Older ones that have not been edited do not.

Does WhatsApp backup use my Google storage?

Yes, on Android. In WhatsApp, Settings > Chats > Chat backup lets you leave videos out to shrink it.
