Question
Why can't I downgrade my iCloud storage?
Short answer
Usually because the plan is not managed where you are looking. iCloud+ bought through Apple One, shared by a Family Sharing organiser, or billed to a different Apple Account can't be downgraded from your screen. On iOS 18.4 and later the option also moved to Subscriptions, and a change you already made shows as pending.

Where is the downgrade option now?
Apple moved it. On iOS 18.4 and later, open Settings > your name > Subscriptions and tap iCloud+ under Active. On older versions it sits under Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Change Storage Plan > Downgrade Options. On a Mac with macOS Tahoe 26 or later, go to System Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > Manage Plan.
Which situations block a downgrade?
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No iCloud+ under Subscriptions | You are signed in with a different Apple Account | Check the Apple receipt email for the account that pays |
| Plan shows as shared | A family organiser pays for it | Ask the organiser, or leave the family group |
| iCloud+ is inside Apple One | Storage is part of a bundle | Change or cancel the Apple One bundle instead |
| No Cancel button, red expiry text | It is already cancelled | Nothing to do; it ends on the date shown |
| Smaller plan already listed | A downgrade is pending | Wait for the billing date |
Apple's subscriptions page states that if there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled. Many people who think the button is broken have in fact already cancelled.
Apple One is the case that confuses people most. Its storage is not a separate iCloud+ line, so the iCloud screen offers no downgrade. Open Subscriptions, tap Apple One, and switch to a smaller bundle or cancel it. You can then buy a standalone iCloud+ tier if you still want some paid space.
What if the screen shows an error instead?
- Update iOS, then try again. Menus on old versions sometimes fail to load plan options.
- Check that the payment method on the account is valid. An expired card can block plan changes.
- Try a different route: a Mac, iCloud for Windows, or the web.
What if I no longer have an Apple device?
You can still change the plan from a browser. See how to cancel iCloud+ without an iPhone for the exact web route. Windows users can also use iCloud for Windows: Manage > Change Storage Plan > Downgrade Options.
Once the change goes through, plan around being over the smaller limit. The iCloud guide covers what to delete first.
Frequently asked questions
Will downgrading take effect straight away?
No. You keep the bigger plan until the current billing period ends, then the smaller one starts.
Do I have to delete data before Apple lets me downgrade?
No. Apple allows the change even if you are over. Syncing and backups simply stop until you fit.
Who do I contact if none of this works?
Apple Support, through the Apple Support app or getsupport.apple.com. Have the receipt email ready so they can find the right account.
