Question

Is Google One worth it? Who should pay and who shouldn't

Short answer

If your Google account is full and you rely on Google Photos for backup, the 100 GB Basic plan is usually worth it; it lists at $1.99 a month in the US. Bigger and AI plans only pay off if you share them or use the extras. If junk fills your 15 GB, clearing it is cheaper than paying.

Who gets real value from it?

  • Android users with years of photos. Backup is the one thing that saves you if the phone is lost.
  • Families. Plans can be shared with up to five others, so one plan can replace several.
  • Heavy Gmail users whose inbox alone is near 15 GB.
  • People who would use the AI plan extras, such as Gemini features in Gmail and Docs, not just the storage.

When is it not worth paying?

When the space is used by things you don't want. Burst repeats, chat forwards, old screenshots and Gmail newsletters with images can fill 15 GB on their own. Paying to store them every month is the most expensive way to keep junk.

It is also weak value if you back up photos elsewhere, such as a computer or another cloud, and only use Gmail lightly. Google's own storage manager estimates how long your storage will last based on how often you back up, which helps you judge whether you need to pay at all.

A third case is a temporary spike. A wedding, a new baby or a long trip can push a library over the limit for a few months; paying monthly through that period and cleaning afterwards can cost less than a yearly plan.

How do I decide for my account?

  1. Check one.google.com/storage. Note the totals for Photos, Gmail and Drive.
  2. Run Clean up space and see how much is suggested for deletion.
  3. If cleaning gets you well under 15 GB, stay free. If you are still over, pick the smallest plan that leaves a margin.
  4. Prefer yearly billing if you keep it; Google says yearly can save up to 16%.

UK and EU prices differ from the US and change by country, so check one.google.com/about/plans from where you live. For the comparison with Apple, see is iCloud or Google One cheaper. To trim first, use the Google One guide.

On the phone side, a pay-once cleaner is another way to stay inside the free tier. GalleryJury, soon on Google Play for Android, keeps the best of each burst and clears copies, junk screenshots and forwarded images before they upload. You try it on 50 photos free, then pay $5 once for 5,000, with no subscription.

Whatever you choose, revisit it in a year. Libraries grow, prices change, and a plan that made sense for a new phone may be more than you need once old clutter is gone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google One worth it in the UK?

The same logic applies. Compare the local price for 100 GB with the cost of clearing space yourself. Google shows UK prices in pounds on its plans page.

Does Google One make my phone faster?

No. It adds cloud space only. Phone storage and speed are unchanged.
