Question
What happens to my photos if I stop paying for iCloud?
Short answer
Your existing photos stay in iCloud Photos and on your devices. Cancelling iCloud+ does not delete them. If the library is larger than the free 5 GB, new photos and videos stop uploading, so recent shots exist only on the phone. The real risk is a phone set to keep small versions instead of originals.

Does cancelling iCloud storage delete photos?
No. Apple's own wording is that if content is over the new limit, new photos and videos won't upload to iCloud Photos. Upload stops; nothing already in the library is removed. Your iPhone, iPad and Mac keep showing the photos they already synced.
The catch is that your library stops being a backup. Anything you shoot after the plan ends sits only on the device until you free space or pay again. Lose the phone and those photos go with it.
Shared albums and an iCloud Shared Photo Library follow the same rule. Members can still view what is there, but if you created the shared library, its photos count against your quota and new additions may stop syncing.
How can I check what is safe right now?
- Open Settings > Photos and see which option is ticked: Optimize or Download and Keep Originals.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Library tab. A line such as "Uploading" or "Paused" shows whether everything has reached iCloud.
- On a computer, sign in at icloud.com/photos and spot-check a few recent shots at full size.
Why does Optimize iPhone Storage matter here?
With Optimize iPhone Storage turned on, the phone keeps lightweight versions and fetches the full file from iCloud when you open it. That works while iCloud holds the originals. It becomes a problem if you later switch iCloud Photos off on that phone or sign out to move to Android.
How do I keep every photo and still stop paying?
- Make a full-size copy somewhere you control: a computer, an external drive, or another cloud.
- Shrink the library by removing duplicates, bursts and screenshots in Albums > Utilities.
- Empty Recently Deleted so the removed items stop counting.
- Cancel or pick a smaller plan once the library fits, or accept that new photos won't upload.
Moving to Android? Google Photos can take over the backup, though it has its own 15 GB shared limit. See whether iCloud or Google One is cheaper and the full stop-paying guide.
Frequently asked questions
Will my photos disappear from my iPhone when iCloud+ ends?
No. Photos already on the phone stay. Only full-size originals held in iCloud and not on the phone are at risk if you later turn iCloud Photos off.
Can I still view my iCloud photos on the web after cancelling?
Yes. Photos already in the library remain in your account. Being over the limit blocks new uploads, not access to what is there.
