Question

How do I free up space on Android without deleting photos?

Short answer

Keep the photos but move or shrink everything else. Let Google Photos remove phone copies that are already backed up, clear app caches, archive apps you rarely use, delete offline downloads, and move files to an SD card if your phone has a slot. Android 14 and later also offer Smart Storage to automate some of this.

What can I clear that isn't a photo?

App cachesSettings > Apps > [app] > Storage > Clear cacheNo; the app rebuilds it
Unused appsSettings > Storage > Free up space, or archive the appArchiving keeps your data
Offline downloadsInside Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, MapsOnly the offline copy
Old downloadsFiles by Google > DownloadsCheck before deleting
Chat mediaWhatsApp > Settings > Storage and data > Manage storageOnly the files you pick

Google's Android help notes that some of these steps only work on Android 14 and up, and that uninstalled paid apps can be reinstalled without paying again.

Start with the Settings storage screen to see which category is largest before clearing anything.

Can I keep photos but take them off the phone?

Yes, if they are backed up. In Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then Free up space on this device. It removes phone copies of photos already in your Google account. They stay viewable in Google Photos; photos newer than 30 days may stay on the device. See what Free up space does before you tap it.

Smart Storage can do this automatically when the phone is nearly full. Find it under Settings > Storage > Free up space, then the menu, then Settings. Phone makers name these screens differently, so look for similar wording on Samsung or Xiaomi.

No cloud? Move photos to an SD card if your phone has one, or copy them to a computer over USB. Both keep the originals in your hands.

Offline maps, downloaded playlists and podcast episodes are often the biggest non-photo items. Removing downloads you no longer need in Google Maps, Spotify or YouTube can free several gigabytes, and you can download them again before the next trip.

Are some photos really not worth keeping?

Keeping every photo you care about doesn't mean keeping every file. Exact copies, nine extra shots of one pose and expired screenshots are not memories. Removing those can free gigabytes without losing a single moment. Files by Google's Duplicate files card handles exact copies; the photo space guide covers the rest.

Chat media is the other easy target. Turning off automatic downloads in WhatsApp stops new forwards arriving without touching the photos you took yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing cache delete photos?

No. Cache is temporary data. Avoid Clear storage, which resets the app and can remove its files.

Will moving photos to an SD card slow them down?

Slightly on cheaper cards, but viewing is fine. Use a reputable card and keep a backup, since cards can fail.

Does this work on Android tablets?

Yes. The same Settings and Google Photos steps apply on tablets, though menus may be named slightly differently.
