Question
Does Samsung Gallery find duplicate photos?
Short answer
Yes, on recent Galaxy phones. In One UI 7 the Gallery's old Suggestions menu became Clean out, where duplicate pictures are grouped. Samsung's My Files app also lists them under Analyze storage, then Duplicate files. Both look for identical copies, so near-identical burst shots and re-sent chat versions are mostly missed.

Where is the duplicates option on my Galaxy?
Samsung's support page confirms that "In One UI 7, the Gallery Suggestions function has been changed to Clean Out." Open Gallery, tap the menu (three lines), and look for Clean out. Older One UI versions show Suggestions instead. Menus also vary by model and region.
The second route is the My Files app:
- Open My Files.
- Tap Analyze storage.
- Tap Duplicate files.
- Select the copies and tap Delete.
Clean out lists matching pictures in groups. Tap a group to compare the copies side by side, then use the select option to tick the extras. Some versions pre-select the copies for you; check that the one you want to keep is left unticked.
How do I avoid deleting both copies?
My Files groups each set but leaves selection to you. Samsung itself cautions that selecting every file in a group deletes the originals too. Leave one in each group, ideally the one in the DCIM/Camera folder, which is usually the camera's full-size file.
Deleted items go to the Gallery's Recycle bin, where you can restore them for a while. Check it before emptying.
Samsung Cloud or OneDrive sync can carry deletions across. If you sync Gallery with OneDrive, deleting a copy on the phone may also remove it there, so confirm the sync setting before a large clean.
What will Samsung's tools miss?
- Burst shots and repeat takes. Different files, so not flagged.
- Chat copies. WhatsApp re-compresses images, so the copy is not identical to the original.
- Edited versions. A cropped or filtered copy is a new file.
For those, you need a tool that compares what the pictures show. The duplicate photos guide covers the free route in more depth, and the Samsung space page lists other Galaxy-specific wins such as Device care.
Duplicates spread across a memory card and internal storage can also confuse matters. Samsung's scan includes both on most models, but a copy on the card may be the only one if you moved files rather than copied them.
Before deleting, look at file size and folder. The larger file in DCIM/Camera is almost always the one to keep; smaller copies in Download or WhatsApp folders are the extras.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Samsung Gallery show the same photo twice?
Often because the image exists in two folders, for example a WhatsApp folder and a Sent folder. Both are real files. Removing the copy in the Sent folder usually frees space safely.
Does Clean out work on older Galaxy phones?
Clean out is the One UI 7 name. Older phones may show Suggestions, or only the My Files route.
Is My Files duplicate scan free?
Yes. It is part of Samsung's built-in My Files app and needs no account or subscription.
