Question
Can Android delete duplicate photos automatically?
Short answer
Not on its own. Android has no setting that removes duplicates in the background. Files by Google finds exact copies and marks the original, and Samsung My Files lists duplicates, but you still tick and confirm. That review step is deliberate: a fully automatic delete can remove the copy you meant to keep.

What do the free tools automate?
| Tool | Finds automatically | Deletes automatically |
|---|---|---|
| Files by Google | Exact duplicate files, with an Original badge | No, you select and confirm |
| Samsung My Files | Duplicate files under Analyze storage | No |
| Samsung Gallery (One UI 7) | Suggestions moved to Clean out | No |
| Google Photos | Doesn't show a duplicates list | No |
In Files by Google: Menu, then Clean, then the Duplicate files card and Select files. Google's advice is short: "We recommend that you keep the original file."
Neither tool runs on a schedule. You open the card or the scan when you want it, which keeps a person in the loop at the cost of a little effort each month.
Why not delete everything flagged without looking?
Because tools disagree with you about which copy matters. Samsung's own support page warns that if you delete all files after checking them, the original files are also deleted. A duplicate finder may also pair a camera original with a smaller copy saved from a chat; deleting the wrong one keeps the worse version.
The other risk is choosing the wrong keeper. A finder that keeps the newest file may keep a compressed chat copy and drop the camera original, which looks the same on a small screen but prints badly.
Android itself adds a final check. Since Android 11, an app that wants to remove photos it did not create must ask the system, which shows you a confirmation listing the items, so a fully silent clean is not something an ordinary app can do.
Cloud copies complicate it further. With Google Photos backup on, removing a duplicate through Google Photos also removes it from your account, while deleting with a file manager leaves the backed-up copy in place.
What is the closest to automatic that is still safe?
- A cleaner that pre-selects the copies, shows each group, and waits for one tap to confirm.
- Deletions sent to the phone's trash first, so a mistake can be undone for a while.
- A clear list of what was removed, so you can check the result afterwards.
That is the pattern GalleryJury follows. The Android app, coming soon to Google Play, groups near-identical copies, keeps the best shot from each burst, keeps documents protected and removes nothing without your OK; approved deletions go to the phone's trash first. Frequently asked questions
Is Files by Google free?
Yes. It is made by Google, has no subscription, and the duplicate finder is part of the Clean tab.
Does it find similar photos, not just copies?
No. It finds identical files. Burst shots and slightly different takes need a tool that compares picture content; see duplicate vs similar.
