Question
Why is Google Photos storage still full after deleting photos?
Short answer
Most likely they are still in the Google Photos trash, which keeps deleted items for 30 days and counts them until then. Empty it in Collections > Trash. If you used Free up space, that only cleared your phone, not your Google account. And if Gmail or Drive is the bigger user, photo deletes barely move the bar.

Did I delete from the phone or from the cloud?
Google Photos has two delete actions that look similar:
| Action | What it removes | Frees Google storage? |
|---|---|---|
| Delete (trash icon) in Google Photos | Cloud copy and phone copy | Yes, once the trash is emptied |
| Free up space on this device | Only phone copies already backed up | No |
| Delete from device (in a photo's menu) | Only the phone copy | No |
| Deleting in the phone's own gallery | Phone copy; cloud copy stays | No |
Google says deleting in the Google Photos app removes both the Google Photos copy and the one on your device. The other three options leave the cloud copy, so your quota does not change.
How long does the trash keep photos?
Google's Android help page currently says deleted photos and videos stay in your trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. Until then they still use your storage. Open Collections, then Trash, then the menu, and choose Empty trash to free the space today. Once emptied, they can't be restored.
Archive is not deletion. Moving photos to Archive only hides them from the main grid; they keep their full size in your account and still use quota.
Locked Folder items are a separate case. On Android they are kept on the device and are not backed up unless you turn that on, so removing them frees phone space but may not change your Google number.
Why might photo deletes not be enough?
- Gmail and Drive share the same 15 GB; check one.google.com/storage to see the split.
- Small photos add up slowly. Deleting 500 screenshots may free less than deleting one long video.
- Storage saver photos backed up before June 2021 were free, so deleting them frees nothing.
- The meter can take some hours to refresh after a big delete.
For the biggest wins in Photos, use Manage storage, which groups large videos, blurry photos and screenshots. The Google Photos guide explains each, and what to delete first covers Gmail and Drive.
Large videos are usually the quickest win. A few minutes of 4K footage can match thousands of screenshots, so sort by size before deleting anything one photo at a time.
Frequently asked questions
Can I restore something I emptied from trash?
No. Google says permanently deleted photos and videos can't be restored. Check another backup or a computer copy.
Does archiving photos free space?
No. Archive only hides photos from the main view. They still count toward storage.
Is the iPhone app the same?
The idea is the same, but iPhone also has its own Recently Deleted album. Deleting in Google Photos on iPhone can send the phone copy there too.
