How-to guide

AI photo cleaner: how it decides what to keep

Short answer

An AI photo cleaner first finds exact copies by comparing files, then groups similar shots taken seconds apart and scores each for sharpness, exposure and framing to keep the best one. It also sorts screenshots, memes and forwards from real photos. A careful cleaner protects documents and recent photos, keeps anything it is unsure about, and asks before deleting.

What is an AI photo cleaner?

A photo cleaner finds photos you can delete. A basic one compares files and flags exact copies. An AI photo cleaner also looks at what is in each picture, so it can tell five near-identical shots of the same moment from five different moments, and a meme from a photo of your kids.

How does it find duplicates and similar photos?

TypeHow it is foundWho can do it
Exact duplicatesSame file content, compared on the phoneFiles by Google, Samsung Gallery, most cleaners
Lower-res copiesSame picture at a smaller size, such as a re-sent WhatsApp copyAI cleaners; free tools mostly miss these
Similar shots (bursts)Visual similarity plus capture time: the same scene, seconds apartAI cleaners; iOS Duplicates album catches near-exact ones

Capture time matters. A burst at a birthday party becomes one group; the same cake photographed a week later stays separate.

How does the AI pick the best shot?

Within a group, each photo is scored on what people look for when they choose by hand:

  • Sharpness: motion blur and missed focus lose points.
  • Exposure: too dark, washed out or blown-out skies count against a shot.
  • Framing: cut-off subjects and tilted horizons count against a shot.
  • Clearest moment: the shot that shows the scene most cleanly wins ties.

The top shot is marked Keep. A good cleaner shows the whole group side by side so you can swap the pick.

How does it tell junk from real photos?

The model reads what a picture is about. Typical categories:

  • Screenshots that have expired: one-time codes, delivery tracking, old boarding passes.
  • Forwards: greeting cards, quote images and memes from group chats.
  • Accidental shots: pocket photos, the floor, a dark frame.
  • Old reminders: a parking-level sign or a price tag from months ago.

Real photos of people, places and events stay, even if they arrived through a chat app.

What should an AI cleaner never delete?

  • Documents and IDs: passports, driver's licenses, ID cards, bank details, prescriptions.
  • Favourites and photos in albums you protect.
  • Very recent photos (GalleryJury keeps the last 48 hours).
  • Anything the model is unsure about. Unsure should mean keep.

Does the AI run on my phone or in the cloud?

Both exist. On-device cleaners never upload photos but use smaller models. Server-based ones can use a larger model. Ask what is sent, at what size, and whether it is kept.

GalleryJury, coming soon to Android, finds exact copies on the phone. For the AI check it sends shrunk copies (512–1024px) to its AI provider, and its servers delete them right after. Scores and decisions are stored on your phone. Location and camera make and model are never sent. See privacy and safety.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI photo cleaner better than Files by Google?

For exact copies, Files by Google is free and good. AI cleaners add similar shots, lower-res copies and junk categories that file comparison can't see.

Can an AI cleaner delete the wrong photo?

Yes, any tool can. Choose one that lets you review groups, protects documents, keeps photos it is unsure about and sends deletions to the trash first.

Does GalleryJury recognise people?

No. This version judges sharpness, exposure, framing and what a picture shows. It does not identify anyone.
