What is an exact duplicate photo? Byte-for-byte copies explained
Short answer
An exact duplicate photo is a second copy of the same image file, identical byte for byte. It usually appears when a picture is saved twice, copied between folders or received in two chats. Because the data matches, a tool can find it with a file hash and remove the extra copy without any loss.

How do exact duplicates end up on a phone?
Most copies are created by the phone itself or by apps, not by you. Common causes:
- The same image sent to two chats. Each chat app download writes its own file, so one meme can exist three or four times.
- Folder copies. Moving pictures to an SD card with "Copy" instead of "Move" leaves both versions behind.
- Restores. Restoring a backup onto a phone that still holds the originals often doubles a whole camera roll.
- Editing apps that save a new file. Some editors write a copy even when you made no change.
A file that was resized or re-compressed on the way is no longer an exact duplicate. It becomes a near-duplicate photo, which needs visual comparison to catch.
On a typical Android phone the biggest sources are chat downloads: the WhatsApp Images folder, Telegram's download folder and the Download folder used by browsers and email apps.
How do tools detect an exact duplicate?
The reliable method is to compute a file hash such as SHA-256 for every image and group files whose hashes match. Two files with the same SHA-256 value are, for practical purposes, the same bytes. Comparing file size first makes this fast, since files of different sizes cannot match.
| Check | Catches exact copies? | Catches resized copies? |
|---|---|---|
| File name | Unreliable (names differ) | No |
| File size + hash | Yes | No |
| Visual comparison | Yes | Yes |
Files by Google uses this kind of matching for its Duplicate files card and marks one copy with an "Original" badge so you know which to keep.
Which copy should you keep?
All copies hold the same pixels, but they are not equal in context. Keep the one in the camera folder (DCIM) or the one that is backed up, because deleting a backed-up copy through Google Photos also removes it from the cloud. Delete copies in chat folders and download folders first. The guide to deleting duplicate photos walks through each free tool step by step.
Two quick checks avoid regret. Open both copies and confirm the date taken matches, since a restored copy can carry a newer file date. Then check whether either sits inside an album you care about, because removing the album's copy can leave a gap in that album.
Where does an AI cleaner add value?
Exact copies are the easy part, and free tools handle them well. GalleryJury, an Android app coming soon to Google Play, matches exact copies on the phone and then goes further, grouping near-identical shots and forwards so one pass covers both. Nothing is removed until you approve it.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to delete exact duplicates?
Yes, as long as one copy stays. The pixels and metadata are identical, so nothing is lost. Check which copy is backed up before deleting.
Why does my gallery show only one copy when Files by Google finds two?
Some galleries group files by content or hide chat folders. File managers list every file on storage, so they reveal copies the gallery view hides.
