What is the Android trash? Where deleted photos go first

Short answer

The Android trash is a holding area where deleted photos and videos wait before being erased for good. Android 11 added a system-level trash for media, Samsung Gallery calls it the Recycle bin, and Google Photos has its own Trash. Items usually stay for 30 days. They still use storage until the trash is emptied.

Which trash holds my deleted photo?

Retention periods from Google and Samsung support pages.
Where you deleted itWhere it goesHow long
Google Photos appGoogle Photos Trash, on the phone and in the cloud if backed up30 days
Samsung GalleryGallery Recycle bin30 days
Files by GoogleFiles Trash30 days
A third-party app using the system trashMediaStore trash, shown in the gallery's trashSystem-defined, typically 30 days

Several trashes can exist at once. A photo deleted in Samsung Gallery sits in its Recycle bin, while the backed-up copy in Google Photos is unaffected unless you delete it there too.

Each app shows its own trash, so check every one you used.

How does the system trash work?

Since Android 11, apps can ask the system to move media to the trash instead of erasing it. The app calls createTrashRequest, Android shows you a confirmation, and the file is flagged with IS_TRASHED. Trashed items are hidden from normal views and permanently deleted after a system-defined period. Apps can also ask for immediate deletion with createDeleteRequest, which skips the trash. This consent step is part of scoped storage, and the underlying index is MediaStore.

GalleryJury, still in development for Android, uses the trash route: anything you approve for removal goes to the phone's trash first, so a mistake can be restored while the item is still there.

Trashed files are not moved to a special folder. They stay where they were, hidden, which is why a file manager can sometimes show their size even though the gallery does not list them.

Why didn't my storage go down after deleting?

Because trashed items still occupy space. To reclaim it now:

  1. Open the gallery app's menu and choose Recycle bin or Trash.
  2. Review the items, restore anything you want to keep.
  3. Tap Empty or Delete all and confirm.
  4. Repeat in Google Photos and Files by Google if you deleted there.

Some galleries let you set the retention or turn the trash off. Leaving it on is safer: the cost is space for a few weeks, and the benefit is a way back from an accidental delete.

If space matters right away, empty the trash after you have checked it rather than turning the feature off for good. That way the safety net is there for the next clean.

How is the trash different from a backup?

A trash is temporary and lives on the phone. It protects against an accidental delete for a few weeks but not against losing or breaking the device. A backup is a copy somewhere else that lasts until you remove it. Treat the trash as an undo window and a cloud or computer copy as your real safety net; the backup vs sync page explains why sync alone is not enough.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover a photo after the trash is emptied?

Usually not from the phone. Check whether a backed-up copy exists in Google Photos or another cloud service.

Do items in Google Photos Trash count against my storage?

Backed-up items in Trash still count until they are permanently deleted, so empty it if your quota is full.
