Feature
Duplicate photo remover for Android: delete exact copies safely
Short answer
GalleryJury finds exact duplicate photos, the same image saved more than once, by comparing file content rather than names. It keeps the copy with the original quality and folder, usually your camera roll, and suggests removing the others. Duplicates often come from WhatsApp re-downloads, copied folders and restored backups.

Where do duplicate photos come from?
- The same photo received in several WhatsApp groups.
- Photos re-downloaded from a cloud backup onto a phone that already had them.
- Folders copied during a phone transfer or from a computer.
- Edits saved as a new copy next to the original.
Exact duplicates vs similar photos: what is the difference?
| Exact duplicate | Similar photo | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The same image saved twice | Different shots of the same moment |
| How it is found | File content match on the phone | AI visual grouping plus time |
| What is kept | Highest-quality copy in the best folder | The best shot, judged by AI |
| Risk of a wrong delete | Very low | Low, and reviewable |
Smaller copies of the same photo (for example a WhatsApp-compressed version of a camera photo) are a separate category, Lower-res copies: the full-quality original is kept. Similar photos are handled by the best-shot picker.
Which copy does it keep?
The copy with the highest resolution and the original date is kept. If two copies are identical, the one in your Camera folder wins over WhatsApp, Downloads or a copied folder.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free way to remove duplicate photos on Android?
Yes. Files by Google has a free Duplicate files card that finds exact copies. It does not handle similar photos or forwards. Compare the two.
Does it find duplicates between my phone and Google Photos?
No. GalleryJury works only on the photos stored on your phone and does not connect to Google Photos. See how to free up space in Google Photos for Google's own tools.
