How-to guide

How to delete similar photos on Android and keep the best one

Short answer

Android has no universal similar-photos tool. By hand: open your gallery in grid view, sort by date, pinch to see more photos, and long-press to multi-select every shot except the best. Some Samsung phones group similar pictures for you. An AI cleaner can group similar shots and keep the sharpest, best-framed one automatically.

How to delete similar photos by hand

  1. Open the gallery in date order. Open Google Photos or your phone's gallery. Similar shots sit next to each other because they were taken seconds apart.
  2. Zoom in on each group. Open the first photo of a group and swipe through. Zoom in on the main subject to check sharpness.
  3. Pick the keeper. Decide which one to keep. Favourite it (heart or star) so you don't select it by mistake.
  4. Multi-select the rest. Back in the grid, long-press the first unwanted photo and tap the others in the group.
  5. Delete and repeat. Tap Delete or Move to trash. Repeat for the next group.

Some recent One UI versions group similar images and suggest one to keep. Look in Gallery under the menu (☰) > Suggestions or in storage cleanup. Availability varies by model and update.

How long does it take to do by hand?

At 2 to 3 seconds a photo to view, judge and select, 3,000 photos take around 2 hours, and it is easy to give up halfway. That is the main reason galleries stay full.

What makes one photo better than another?

  • Sharp main subject. Zoom to 100% on the person or thing that matters.
  • Good exposure. Not too dark, no blown-out sky.
  • Framing. Nobody's head cut off; level horizon.
  • The moment. In group shots, pick the one where everyone looks ready. Only you can judge that.

GalleryJury's AI judge scores sharpness, exposure and framing; give group shots a quick look yourself. You can swap its pick in one tap. See how the best-shot picker works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between duplicate and similar photos?

A duplicate is the same image saved twice. Similar photos are different shots of the same moment. Duplicate finders don't catch similar photos.

Can Google Photos delete similar photos?

No. Google Photos can group some similar shots into stacks for viewing, but it doesn't delete the extras for you.
