What makes a photo blurry: motion blur or out of focus?

Short answer

A blurry photo is one where the main subject lacks crisp edges. It has two common causes. Motion blur comes from the phone or the subject moving during the exposure and leaves streaks in one direction. Out-of-focus blur comes from the lens focusing at the wrong distance and makes the subject soft all round.

How can I tell motion blur from out-of-focus blur?

Motion blurOut of focus
What it looks likeStreaks or doubled edges in one directionEven softness, no direction
Usual causeShaky hands or a moving subject in low lightFocus locked on the background or too close to the lens
BackgroundOften blurred the same way as the subjectOften sharp while the subject is soft
Fixable later?Rarely; deblur tools help only with mild casesRarely; detail was never captured

A quick test: zoom in on a bright point, such as a light or a reflection. If it has become a short line, the blur is motion. If it has become a soft disc, the lens missed focus.

Why do phones take blurry photos?

  • Low light. The camera keeps the shutter open longer to gather light, so any movement smears. Night mode helps only if the phone is held still for the whole capture.
  • Moving subjects. Children, pets and sport move faster than an indoor shutter speed can freeze.
  • Close-ups. Phone lenses have a minimum focus distance; closer than that, nothing is sharp.
  • Dirty lens. A fingerprint gives a hazy, glowing softness that looks like poor focus. Wiping the lens on a soft cloth before shooting is the cheapest fix there is.
  • Digital zoom. Zooming past the phone's optical range enlarges pixels instead of adding detail, so distant subjects turn mushy even when focus was right.

Should I delete blurry photos?

Delete them when a sharper version of the same moment exists, or when the blur hides the subject entirely. Keep them when the photo is the only record of something that matters; a soft picture of a late grandparent is still worth more than none.

Files by Google flags blurry pictures in its Clean tab on Android, and Google Photos can surface blurry photos in its storage tools. Both leave the final choice to you. For a step-by-step route, see how to delete blurry photos.

How do cleaners measure blur?

Most use a sharpness score that counts how much fine edge detail the image holds. A crisp photo has many strong, sudden changes in brightness at edges; a blurred one has gentle gradients. Comparing scores inside a group of near-identical shots works far better than a fixed cut-off, because a misty landscape is naturally softer than a street sign. Some tools also check only the middle of the frame, where the subject usually sits.

GalleryJury, coming soon for Android, applies this inside each burst: the sharp frame stays and the smeared copies are offered for removal, with nothing deleted until you agree.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI unblur a photo?

Some editors, including Google Photos' tools on supported phones, can sharpen mild blur. Heavy motion blur or a badly missed focus usually cannot be recovered, because the detail was never recorded.

Why is only the background sharp?

The camera focused on the background instead of your subject. Tapping the subject on screen before taking the photo sets focus there.
