Question
Is App Cleaner or Smart Cleaner free? What "free" means in cleaner apps
Short answer
Usually only to download. Most apps sold as App Cleaner or Smart Cleaner open with a scan for free, then ask for a trial or subscription before deleting much. The store listing says whether there are in-app purchases and shows a price range. The real cost is the plan that starts when the trial ends.

What do free, freemium and trial mean on a listing?
| Label on the store | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Free | No charge to install |
| Contains ads | Free features paid for by adverts |
| In-app purchases | Some features cost money inside the app |
| Free trial | Paid plan that starts automatically unless cancelled |
Several different apps use the names App Cleaner and Smart Cleaner, from different developers, so check the developer name before reading reviews. Prices and plans differ between them and between countries.
Free scans are a sales tool. A cleaner can show a large number of gigabytes to clear and only reveal the paywall when you tap the button to delete them, which is why many users feel caught at that step rather than at install.
How do I find the real price before I pay?
- On Google Play, open the listing and tap About this app; the in-app purchase range appears there.
- On the App Store, scroll to In-App Purchases for the list of plan prices.
- Read the plan screen inside the app slowly, including the small text under the button.
- Divide a weekly price by seven and multiply by 365 to see the yearly cost.
Weekly billing is where most of the money goes. In the October 2026 review analysis of 40,376 reviews, weekly pricing drew 16.9% of billing complaints, and weekly-subscription cleaners averaged 2.87 stars against 4.04 for apps that were free or sold once.
Trials deserve their own check. A three-day or seven-day trial that converts to a weekly plan will charge on the day it ends, so set a reminder for the day before, or cancel straight after starting and use the remaining days.
What can I do for free instead?
Android's own tools cover the basics at no cost. Files by Google clears junk and exact duplicate files, and Samsung Gallery's Clean out finds identical pictures on Galaxy phones. The Smart Cleaner page collects what users report about one of these apps, and its cancel steps help if a trial already started.
If you prefer a paid photo cleaner without renewals, GalleryJury, coming soon to Google Play for Android, lets you try 50 photos free, then charges $5 for 5,000 photos, paid once with no subscription. The no-subscription guide lists other options.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Smart Cleaner without paying?
Often only the scan. Deleting in bulk or using the photo tools is usually behind the paywall.
Will I be charged if I just install it?
No. A charge needs you to start a trial or subscription and confirm with the store.
Is the free version worth keeping?
Only if it does something your phone's own tools don't. Most free tiers show results but limit what you can remove.
