How-to guide
Phone storage full? What to do on Android, in order of impact
Short answer
Open Settings > Storage to see what is using space. On most phones photos, videos and WhatsApp media take the biggest share, so start there: remove duplicate, blurry and forwarded images, let Google Photos remove backed-up copies, then clear app caches and old downloads. Unused apps and offline media are next.

How to free up space on an Android phone
- See what is using space. Open Settings > Storage. Note the size of Images, Videos, Apps and Other. Menus vary by phone maker; on Samsung it is Settings > Battery and device care > Storage.
- Use Android's built-in Free up space. In Settings > Storage, tap Free up space, pick photos, videos or apps you no longer need, and tap Move files to Trash. Google notes some of these steps need Android 14 or later.
- Remove phone copies of backed-up photos. In Google Photos, tap your profile picture > Free up space on this device > Free up [x]. Only photos already backed up are removed from the phone, and photos under 30 days old may stay.
- Clean WhatsApp media. In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. Review Forwarded many times and Larger than 5 MB, then delete. See the WhatsApp guide.
- Delete duplicates and junk with Files by Google. Open Files by Google > Clean. Use the Junk files, Duplicate files, Delete memes and Delete suggested pictures cards.
- Clear app caches. Go to Settings > Apps, open large apps such as Chrome, Instagram or YouTube, tap Storage, then Clear cache. Do not tap Clear data unless you are happy to sign in again.
- Remove offline downloads. Delete downloaded episodes, playlists and maps you have finished with in Netflix, Spotify, YouTube and Google Maps.
- Uninstall apps you do not use. Files by Google's Delete unused apps card lists apps you have not opened in weeks.
- Empty the trash. Files moved to Trash still use space until the trash is emptied or 30 days pass. Empty Trash in Files by Google and in your gallery app to get the space back now.
What usually fills an Android phone?
For most people, it is media. Camera photos and videos, WhatsApp images and videos, and screenshots together usually outweigh apps. Apps and their caches come second. "System" and "Other" are the operating system and app data, and you can't clear most of them directly.
Why is my phone storage full when there is nothing on it?
- Trash still counts. Deleted photos sit in the gallery's trash for up to 30 days. Empty it.
- WhatsApp media is hidden from the gallery if Media visibility is off, but still on the phone. Check WhatsApp's Manage storage.
- App caches grow quietly. Browsers and social apps can hold several GB each.
- Messages with attachments, offline maps and downloads live inside apps, not in your gallery.
Which fix frees the most space?
| Fix | Typical space freed | Risk | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete videos you don't need | High (4K video uses hundreds of MB per minute) | Low if reviewed | Minutes |
| Remove backed-up phone copies (Google Photos) | High | Low, copies stay in the cloud | 1 minute |
| Clear WhatsApp forwards and large files | Medium to high | Low | 5–10 minutes |
| Delete duplicates, similar and blurry photos | Medium to high | Medium by hand, low with review and a trash | 30+ minutes by hand |
| Clear app caches | Medium | None | 5 minutes |
| Uninstall unused apps | Varies | Low | 5 minutes |
Where does an app help?
The free tools above cover exact duplicates, memes and obviously blurry photos. They do not pick the best shot out of ten similar ones, tell a junk screenshot from an ID card, or find good-morning images that are not marked as forwarded. That sorting is the slow part, and it is what GalleryJury, coming soon to Android, is built to do.
Frequently asked questions
Will clearing cache delete my photos?
No. Clearing an app's cache removes temporary files only. Clearing an app's data is different and signs you out of the app.
Is it safe to delete the Android folder or the .thumbnails folder?
Do not delete the Android folder; it holds app data. The .thumbnails folder can be deleted, but the system rebuilds it, so the space saved is temporary.
How much free space should a phone have?
Keeping at least 10 to 15% free helps the phone run updates and stay responsive. Many phones warn when free space falls below about 10%.
