Feature

Accidental and blurry photo remover: clear out pocket shots and shaky photos

Short answer

GalleryJury finds accidental shots that are black, all-finger or of the floor, and suggests them for removal. Blurry and poor shots are a separate category that is off by default, because a blurry photo is sometimes the only one of a moment; switch it on in Settings if you want it. Deleted photos go to Android's trash first.

Will it delete a blurry photo that matters to me?

Sometimes the only photo of a moment is blurry, and you still want it. That is why the Blurry and Poor shots categories are off by default. Blurry extras inside a burst are still handled by the best-shot picker, which keeps the sharpest shot.

You can turn any category on or off in Settings. When unsure, the app keeps the photo.

How is this different from a basic blur detector?

Simple blur detectors measure edge contrast across the whole image, so they flag shallow-depth-of-field portraits and night skies as blurry. An AI judge looks at the subject: a portrait with a soft background and a sharp subject is a good photo. A sharp background with a blurred subject is not.

Can I do this for free without an app?

Partly. Files by Google has a free Delete suggested pictures card for blurry, dark and low-resolution photos, and Google Photos' Manage storage screen lists blurry photos in your backup. Neither looks for pocket shots or compares a blurry photo with a better shot of the same moment. Our guide to deleting blurry photos covers the free methods step by step.

Frequently asked questions

Does it check videos for blur?

Not at launch. Video cleanup is on the roadmap. Today the app looks at photos and screenshots only.

What is a pocket shot?

A photo taken by accident while the phone was in a pocket or bag, or while unlocking it. They are usually black, show fabric or fingers, and are always safe to delete.
