How to free up space on Motorola phones
Short answer
On Motorola phones, open Settings > Storage to see what fills the phone, clear duplicates with Free up space and empty Google Photos's Trash afterwards. We cover 17 Motorola models, from the edge 50 pro to the moto g stylus (2026). 6 of them take a microSD card. Deleted photos stay in the trash for 30 days until emptied.

Free up space on a Motorola phone
- Check what is using space. Open Settings > Storage on the Motorola phone.
- Clear duplicates and junk. Use Free up space (Settings > Storage > Free up space) or Files by Google's Clean tab to remove duplicate files and memes.
- Remove backed-up copies. In Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then Free up space, if your photos are backed up.
- Empty the trash. Open Google Photos > Collections > Trash and empty it; space returns only then.
Where is storage on a Motorola phone?
- Android 11 and later (Motorola): Settings > Storage
Motorola phones run Hello UI (near-stock Android). The storage screen lists apps, images, videos and system files; images and videos are usually the part you can safely shrink.
Where do deleted photos go on Motorola phones?
Google Photos keeps deleted items in Trash for 30 days: Google Photos > Collections > Trash. Motorola uses Google Photos as its gallery, so deleted photos and videos go to Google Photos Trash. Google's help page says they stay there for 30 days, whether or not they were backed up (Android 11 and up).
Which built-in cleaners do Motorola phones have?
- Free up space (Android 11 (Motorola)): Settings > Storage > Free up space. Lists photos, videos, downloads and apps by category. You tap Select files to choose what to delete.
- Smart Storage (Android 11 (Motorola)): Settings > Storage > Free up space > Menu > Settings > Smart Storage. Automatically deletes backed-up photos and videos when storage is nearly full.
- Google Photos: Free up space on this device (Google Photos app): Google Photos > profile picture > Free up space on this device. Deletes the on-phone copies of photos and videos that are already backed up to your Google Account.
- Files by Google cleaning suggestions (Files by Google app): Files by Google > Clean. Suggests junk files, duplicates, large files and old screenshots to delete.
- Files by Google: preinstalled — Files by Google is the file manager on recent Motorola phones, and it has its own Trash for non-photo files (Menu > Trash)..
- Google Photos: Motorola doesn't ship its own gallery app on its recent phones. Google Photos is the camera roll, so if you delete a backed-up photo there, it disappears from every device signed in to that Google Account.
What is different about Motorola storage?
- Most moto g models (g play, g, g power, g stylus, g55) have a microSD slot, but no Edge or razr model in this list has one.
- Recent Motorola spec pages give a default photo resolution of 12.6 MP (3072 x 4096). Their 50 MP sensors use Quad Pixel binning, so a full 50 MP shot is roughly 4x larger.
- The US moto g power, g stylus and g play are sold with 64–256 GB built in, so their microSD slot is the cheapest way to add space for photos and video.
- Top razr ultra, razr fold and edge 50 ultra models record 8K or 4K 60fps video, which fills storage much faster than the default FHD 30fps.
How long do Motorola phones get updates?
The number of updates depends on the model and Motorola states it in each phone's spec footnotes. For example, the razr fold (2026) page promises 7 OS updates and up to 7 years of security updates from global launch. Budget moto g phones get far fewer.
How do Motorola phones differ on storage and photos?
- moto g (6 models, 2024–2026): storage from 64 GB to 256 GB, 6 with microSD, default photos of 12.5 or 8 MP (about 2.4–3.8 MB), and 4 that shoot RAW.
- razr (6 models, 2024–2026): storage from 256 GB to 1 TB, 0 with microSD, default photos of 12.6 MP (about 3.8–3.8 MB), and 1 that shoot RAW.
- Edge (5 models, 2024–2025): storage from 256 GB to 1 TB, 0 with microSD, default photos of 12.5 MP (about 3.8–3.8 MB), and 4 that shoot RAW.
The newest Motorola phone here is the moto g stylus (2026) (April 2026), which starts at 128 GB; the oldest is the edge 50 pro (April 2024). All of them launched on Android 11 or later, so every one has Android's system trash.
