Free up space on a Google phone
- Check what is using space. Open Settings > Storage on the Google phone.
- Clear duplicates and junk. Use Free up space (Settings > Storage > Free up space) or Files by Google's Clean tab to remove duplicate files and memes.
- Remove backed-up copies. In Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then Free up space, if your photos are backed up.
- Empty the trash. Open Google Photos > Collections > Trash and empty it; space returns only then.
Where is storage on a Google phone?
- Android 10 and later (Pixel): Settings > Storage
Google phones run Pixel UI (stock Android). The storage screen lists apps, images, videos and system files; images and videos are usually the part you can safely shrink.
Where do deleted photos go on Google phones?
Google Photos keeps deleted items in Trash for 30 days: Google Photos > Collections > Trash. Google's help page says deleted items stay in Trash for 30 days, whether or not they were backed up (device-only items on Android 11 and up also go to Trash). Files by Google has its own separate 30-day Trash for non-photo files.
Which built-in cleaners do Google phones have?
- Free up space (Android 8 (Pixel)): Settings > Storage > Free up space. Opens a list of old photos, videos, downloads and unused apps you can remove; Browse shows every file category.
- Smart Storage (Android 8 (Pixel)): Settings > Storage > Free up space > Menu > Settings > Smart Storage. Automatically removes backed-up photos and videos when the phone is almost full.
- Google Photos: Free up space on this device (Google Photos app): Google Photos > profile picture > Free up space on this device. Deletes the on-phone copies of photos already backed up to your Google Account.
- Files by Google cleaning suggestions (Files by Google app): Files by Google > Clean. Suggests junk files, duplicates, large files, old screenshots and WhatsApp media to delete.
- Files by Google: preinstalled — Files by Google is the default file manager on Pixel and has its own 30-day Trash (Menu > Trash)..
- Google Photos: Google Photos is the only preinstalled gallery and camera roll on Pixel. Deleting a photo that is backed up removes it from every signed-in device as well.
What is different about Google storage?
- Pixel has no separate gallery app, so Google Photos is the camera roll, and its 30-day Trash is the only photo recycle bin.
- Smart Storage (Settings > Storage > Free up space) can remove backed-up photos automatically when storage runs low.
- Settings > Storage > Free up space hands you over to Files by Google's cleaning suggestions.
- No Pixel has a microSD slot, so freeing space means deleting, offloading to the cloud, or moving files to a USB-C drive.
- Pro models shoot 50 MP High-Res photos and 8K Video Boost clips (from Pixel 9 Pro). Video Boost uploads the clip to Google's cloud to process it, and the phone keeps the large original as well.
How long do Google phones get updates?
Pixel 8 and later get 7 years of OS and security updates. Pixel 6, 7 and Fold get 5 years. Pixel 5a and earlier no longer get updates.
How do Google phones differ on storage and photos?
- Pixel Fold (4 models, 2023–2026): storage from 256 GB to 1 TB, 0 with microSD, default photos of 12 MP (about 3.6–3.6 MB), and 4 that shoot RAW.
- Pixel (16 models, 2020–2026): storage from 128 GB to 1 TB, 0 with microSD, default photos of 12.5 or 12 or 12.2 MP (about 3.6–3.8 MB), and 16 that shoot RAW.
- Pixel a (8 models, 2020–2026): storage from 128 GB to 256 GB, 0 with microSD, default photos of 12 or 16 or 12.2 MP (about 3.6–4.8 MB), and 8 that shoot RAW.
The newest Google phone here is the Pixel 11 Pro Fold (October 2026), which starts at 256 GB; the oldest is the Pixel 4a (August 2020). 1 of them launched before Android 11, so their system trash depends on later updates.
